hEat – Grand Opening @ 23/F QRE, Wanchai – 23 August 2018

Over 300 people celebrated the Grand Opening of hEat (23/F, QRE Plaza building, 202 Queen’s Road East, Wanchai) on the 23 August as the new outlet’s head chef Israel Isy showcased it’s menu including dry aged beef and seafood.

e-Sports Live!

The largest ever local e-sports event, the e-Sports & Music Festival Hong Kong, takes place from 24-26 August at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). Launched last year around a single “Return of the Legends” tournament this year’s Festival features three international
e-sports tournaments: “Return of the Legends”, “Hong Kong PUBG World Invitational” and “Masters Cs:GO 2018 Grand Finals”. The later offers a total prize pool of US$300,000 and over 110 players from across the globe will compete in the three tournaments including local player Tabe, who was a runner-up in the “League of Legends World Championship”…

As with last year there will be an ‘Experience Zone’ which will include the latest e-sports games and related products including game displays, VR experience, mobile game trials, KOL stages, and music performances.

Bruce Lee Tribute Clothing Range

New Era has launched a new Bruce Lee, who passed away 45 years ago, tribute apparel collection. The designs include Lee’s famous “Be Water, My Friend” quote and film stills from Way of the Dragon (1972) and his iconic flying-kick logo silhouette.

The advertising campaign for the seven-piece headwear and six-piece t-shirt range features Hong Kong actor and martial artist German Cheung.

The Bruce Lee range, priced between $419-339, is available now at the New Era store: Shop 221-222, 2/F, Silvercord, 30 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui,.

Chip In, Wanchai

Sai Kung’s Chip In has opened a second branch on Queen’s Road East, bc went along to check out the fish and chips.

Fish and chips a simple yet iconic meal and sadly it’s impossible to find a good ‘English style’ option in Hong Kong. The best iteration recently was a pop-up called The Chippy three years ago in Chater Garden. There were rumours they were going to open a restaurant here, but as yet it hasn’t materialised.

bc hasn’t visited the Sai Kung outlet, so our comments are limited to the Wanchai branch. Service is polite and efficient, at the moment it’s cash only, with all meals being cooked to order.

The European and Atlantic cod shoals were decimated in the 1980s through over fishing, careful management in the decades since has seen stocks rise and this lovely tasty fish is back on the menu. Chip In serves it’s cod in two sizes small ($48) and large ($75) with a fair sized portion of chips and a side of either ketchup or tartar sauce.

The Atlantic cod comes pre-battered and frozen. The photo below is of the large portion, inside the batter the fish was perhaps 8mm thick – not exactly a ‘large’ piece of fish. The cod was hard, didn’t flake well and lacked flavour. The batter was thin, crisp and evenly cooked.

The chips are also cooked from frozen, some of ours were a little cold in the centre but the real problem was they were so bland and tasteless.

The menu also features calamari, chicken nuggets, bacon or sausage butty all $48 and served with chips.

While Chip In is a take-away / delivery outlet only, there are numerous small seating areas nearby to sit down and eat.

If you’re wanting fish and chips Chip In offers it, and while there’s nothing particularly wrong or bad about what they offer. Sadly it’s bland and not a meal you’re going to shout about to your friends or say I’ll be back for another portion tomorrow – which is more than a little disappointing as good fish chips are delicious.

New Tastes Amid Frustration at HK Food Expo 2018

The Food Expo is a frenetic, crazy mix of tastings, shopping and promotions – among those promoting are companies and products looking for exposure and distribution in Hong Kong.

Sadly what was noticeable among many of the new and existing products was the excess of packing materials and the use of single serve packs/portions in very non-recyclable materials. It’s sad to see this continuing push for convenience over conservation.

What is the point of looking to reduce the usage of plastic bottles and bags only to fill the sea and landfills will metallic plastic ones instead. Without wanting to get preachy, the only way that things will change is if you vote with your wallet.

There were no real standout new products/ideas that shouted wow! Here are some of the more interesting ones that you might see on your supermarket shelves and in online stores soon:

Hong Kong Food Expo, US Exhibitors Reception – 16 August 2018

The annual Hong Kong Food Expo is in full swing at the HKCEC, amongst the almost 2,000 exhibitors are several American companies. Apink @ AsiaWorld Expo – 11 August, 2018

K-pop all girl band Apink returned to meet the Hong Kong Panda at AsiaWorld Expo. Apink – Chorong, Bomi, Eunji, Naeun, Namjoo and Hayoung – are known among K-pop fans for their ‘purity and sweetness’  and were awarded the icon ‘Innocent Girl idol group’.

Mike Shinoda – Post Traumatic Tour @ Star Hall – 7 August, 2018

Mike Shinoda, co-lead vocalist and founding member of Linkin Park kicked off his Post Traumatic Tour at KITEC’s Star Hall on the 7 August – it’s his first tour as a solo artist since the death of his Linkin Park bandmate Chester Bennington in 2017.

Shinoda’s setlist comprised of tracks from his 2018 solo album Post Traumatic and multiple hits from Linkin Park and Fort Minor. The show started with Fort Minor’s recent single Welcome, Shinoda’s solo works Place To Start and Crossing A Line before the Linkin Park hits Waiting For The End and an emotional piano version of In The End where Shinoda invited fans to sing Chester’s part.
