Yourspace:
Club Magazine Beat‘nTrack

The third floor of the Cosmos building used to be an office. Now, the only thing left of it is its sparse rectangular shell. What was once hard-wearing industrial carpet is now a shiny floor, buffed enough to reflect kaleidoscopic light shows. What once was the boss’s office has transformed – to two VIP rooms with tinted transparent walls. Where once there were desks, now sit slate-grey rectangular seats in neat rows. This is Club Magazine, a moody little venue nestled in the Fong. The mirrored entrance transports hungry clubbers into a land futuristic. Inside, the black walls shine, bouncing back dancing neon lasers; a strip of TV screens embedded into the far wall flash graphics, opposite, metallic fridges hang in a smart line; rows and rows of glasses sit waiting to be filled. Bar tender Dicky coolly maneuvers bottles from hand-to-hand, blending the club’s classics: frothy frozen peach daiquiris ($75), clear syrupy lychee martinis ($75), and a space-age collection of six little shooters: three Blue Kamikazes and three Blow Jobs – Bailey’s and banana liqueur topped with suggestive squirts of fresh cream ($250 for six). Club Magazine is pared down, bare minimal – slick, rock-star tough with no embellishments, making a refreshing change to the gilded glitz of other local haunts.

Club Magazine opens late August.
3/F Cosmos Building, 8 – 11 Lan Kwai Fong, Central.

The Angel Interview: Rae
From the Feelgood Project

Dear Rae,
I had so much fun scribbling on the walls for your Feelgood Project at FINDS a few weeks ago. I was wondering what’s in store for the second charity bash?
Do tell…

Where did you get such a zany fundraising idea?
I am always thinking of doing projects that are different from what I have done before, that can somehow twist people's attitude. The current scene is kinda commercialised and people are always in conflict when they work for money. I came up with a feelgood project idea that can make everyone feel good for sure.

It certainly did – the marker idea (where punters could draw on the wall with felt pens) was magic.
I guess many people haven't held a colour pen since school. I thought it would be fun to be allowed to colour like mad there. We want everyone to feel stress-free, so we don’t charge any admission. You make a donation when you buy a feelgood
drink and by buying the trucker hats & tees at the Fingercroxx stamp station.

Who are some of the artists appearing on the night?
The artists contributing their animation and video works are all active players in character creation, toy/figurine and motion graphics. Freestyle Collective, from NYC, does lots of experimental and commercial work. Hellohikimori from Paris focus on flashy motion projects and just recently created an international campaign called "send your style." Jeremyville from Australia and Jon Burgerman from London both started with character creation and now their characters are very successful – Jeremyville's recent animation works for MTV are so lovable. Momorobo from Singapore, a team of 4, have a growing name on the Singapore art scene, and made us a feel good video, and Nanospore from LA is a team of two American-born Taiwanese who have just signed a contract with Disney for a series of cartoon projects. Devilrobots from Japan are well-known for their symbolic character To-Fu.

Wow – it’s going be packed to the rafters with funky toys and animations. But how did you decide on ORBIS as the charity?
Our projects are all about visual refreshment – beautiful art plus live music. We have perfect eyesight but there are still some unlucky people who never experience this beautiful world. Sight became the connection and why we’ve decided to help ORBIS (a charity for the prevention of unnecessary blindness).

Feelgood must be taking up a lot of your time – are you neglecting your day job?
J.A.R, my own label – "Just Another Reason" – is not only a job for me, it's my dream, so actually I can work 24 hours a day for it. I work closely with nice artists around the world doing Asia promotion and distribution of merchandise for them, so their passion and good works can be well recognized.

Why do you think Hong Kong folks are becoming more charitable?
I think it is because people are demanding a higher living standard, and so when they know there are people in need they will help with all their capability. It is a good attitude and I hope this can keep going.

And what about Feelgood Project – will that keep going?
We are planning to do it once or twice each year in other cities, to keep spreading this attitude, and we plan to have even more variety later on, with further sessions in 2007. Let’s see what will happen…

See you there (with sparkly bits).
