New York choreographer Mark Jarecke’s complex and physically demanding work Everything Up To and Including should
be a treat for the eyes when it’s performed by Andrea Johnston at the Fringe Studio this Thursday to Saturday. The fragility and brutality of the human body will be in the spotlight for this dance, described by offoffoff.com’s Karinne Keithley as “Inscrutable if you
try to read it in terms of anything other than itself, but quite extraordinary.”

Friday September 15
If you’ve got your act together and picked this magazine up in time, you’ve got about a day and a half to gear up for either Blondie or Lobo, two of the major gigs in town this weekend. The new wave/punk pioneers headed by Deborah Harry will perform at the glitzy Foreign Correspondents’ Club Charity Ball at the HKCEC. If you’re lucky enough to have one of the $1,688 tickets, you can enjoy endless cocktails, dinner, and the David Harilela jazz band after the main event. Meanwhile, in Hall 3 at HKCEC, ’70’s folk icon Lobo, aka Richard LaVoie, will be reminding crowds of a time when music had be good to become a hit. Saturday September 16
Can you smell the liniment in the air? Rugby season gets under way today with the G4S Kowloon 10s at the King’s Park Sports Ground. Catch the on-field action from 1pm until 7:30pm. A pre-tournament Kids’ Rugby Fun Morning runs from 10am to noon for kids from the Society for Community Organisation, and a free introductory session to the sport starts at midday. September 16 and 18
Here it is – the much-anticipated first outing of the season for Edo de Waart’s Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Puccini’s immortal Madama Butterfly takes flight with a star-studded international cast for two shows only, featuring Chinese soprano and Butterfly veteran He Hui in the title role, and American tenor Andrew Richards as Pinkerton. September 20 – 24
A countess enlists her servants, Figaro and his fiancée Susanna, to win back the love of her cheating husband. Problem is, the count’s got his eyes on Susanna… Multiple twisting sub-plots – one of which involves a would-be husband turning out to be a long-lost son – ensue, intertwined with beautiful arias. Introducing Mozart’s great opera Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), brought to you by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the Opera Hong Kong Chorus. 7:30pm shows from the 20th to 23rd, and a 2:30pm matinee on the 24th. September 22 – 24
The Turbulent River Dance Theatre brings its energetic modern dance show Illusion to the Fringe Club Fringe Studio (Tel: 2521 725) for three shows on September 22 and 23 (8pm both nights, with an additional 3pm show on the 23rd). Meanwhile, traditional Chinese dance converges with eclectic modern techniques in the Hong Kong Dance Company’s spectacular showcase Dream Dances at the Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium at 7:45pm on the 22nd and 23rd, with a 3pm show on the 24th.

September 24 and 25
Not much needs to be said about the Vienna Philharmonic. Quite simply, it is one of the best orchestras in the world. Famed conductor Valery Gergiev will lead the musicians in two sold-out performances at the HK Cultural Centre Concert Hall, with two live relays to be played on big screens in the outdoor piazza areas, free of charge. The show starts at 8pm, with admissions to the piazzas beginning at 7pm.
September 26 – 30
A tribute and parody in one, the American Community Theatre’s Nearly Broadway Express promises to be a fun-filled jaunt through the recent history of musicals. Come to simultaneously appreciate and laugh at shows such as Gypsy, Rent and Jesus Christ Superstar in this show of two halves. Fringe Club Fringe Studio. Tel: 31 288 288.
Wednesday September 27
Award-winning British acappella quartet Cantabile will drop by for one laughter-filled show at the HK City Hall Concert Hall. With more than 2,000 live performance and 200 television spots worldwide under their belts, you can be sure of a good night’s entertainment from counter-tenor Richard Bryan, tenor Stephen Brooks, tenor Mark Fleming, and baritone Michael Steffen. September 29 and 30
Modern flamenco innovators Nuevo Ballet Espanol stir up a dance paella with fine Spanish footwork, contemporary dance, flamenco tradition and a dash of 21st century pop. They call it Flamenco Directo and they’ll be serving it up at the Shatin Town Hall Auditorium for your dazzled delight. Tel: 2734 9009.
September 29 – October 8
Once upon a time the beautiful wife of the Divine Archer, Chang O, swallowed a magical pill from her husband and drifted up to the moon. To this day, she’s up there, and on the full moon of the eighth month on the Chinese calendar, her beauty casts a silvery glow upon Earth. What does this mean? Bring out the lanterns! The Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival is upon us, so get along to Victoria Park in Causeway Bay, where you can play lantern riddle games and enjoy some good old performances.
Monday October 2
West End and Broadway star Tony Vincent will headline a musical extravaganza dedicating to raising funds for the Lifeline Express, a charity hospital train that helps treat eye problems in China. Musical Moments will feature hits from We Will Rock You, Rent, Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Miserables, the Phantom of the Opera, and Miss Saigon, among others.
