Yourspace: Philia Lounge

At Philia lounge life couldn’t be more rosy – or emerald or shocking pink or zebra print. Dressed in muted colors and sumptuous fabrics, the casual bar achieves a quiet decadence. We loved the plush velvet sofa, dividing the length of the lounge, offering a chance for groups to mingle and gossip. “I wanted a place where people from different cultures with different interests could come together in harmony,” says the lounge’s creator Winnie Lam. Philia – modern Greek for ‘friendship’ – gets the message across.

The evening starts gently, with soothing music and free finger food at happy hour (5pm – 8pm). A 30-bottle wine list fights for attention with imaginative cocktails and mocktails, or chic misses might enjoy sipping dofu, a creamy martini, frangelico and coconut blend. Later, resident DJ Preston takes to the decks, pumping out cool house and progressive but if electronic isn’t your bag, try Tuesday night jazz. Joe Joe Ngai’s fuzzy-faced art forms a perfect backdrop and is for sale, and the fine, quirky furniture can also be made to order. With choices so sorely tempting, the only question is which credit card to take.

G/F, 4 – 8 Arbuthnot Rd, Central. 2851 1171. Opens at 5pm daily.

The Angel Interview:
DJ Joyce Mercedes

Hey Markus – how was your sun-drenched summer in Ibiza?-
Summer at Ibiza is always fun. It’s great when I can hang out with some of the best DJs in the scene. It’s the people that make it fun.

You sent your radio show – Global DJ Broadcast – out over the airwaves from Spain. Who were your favourite guests and why?-
My favourite? Don’t think I have one, since I love them all. But I think people should watch out for Gabriel & Dresden and Andy Moor.

You started the show a few years back – why radio?

There has always been great radio shows featuring electronica. It was just one of many avenues – we wanted to spread the gospel.

You have described your sound as Progressive with melodies and a dark side. How did you find/evolve the style?-
Being a DJ has never been easy. It took me a better part of a decade to perfect my sound, but it’s ever changing. So, maybe in a few years I’ll lighten up and put out some “melodic and light” stuff.

What attracted you to Trance?
I think it was the dark side of trance… you could meditate on it.
If you don’t mind me saying, Markus, you’re not too bad looking – do you have a lot of groupies around the box?
Thanks for the compliment but no, not more than the usual. But there’ll always be the occasional few…

Your wife has also DJ’d, do you think your son will follow you guys down the DJ path and you’ll be a happy Trance family?-
DJing can be a hard life, especially when you’re still trying to make a name for yourself – the balance of travelling on the road with your family. But I hope he finds what he loves to do and goes for it. I’ll support his decision.

What a supportive dad. Have you got any surprises tucked up your sleeve for us HK audiences?-
I always try to play something that will tease and challenge the audience. So yes…and I can’t tell you what – you’ll have to come and hear for yourself.

Oooh, Markus, you are a mysterious fellow. You’re right; we’ll have to see for ourselves. Hugs and Kisses,

Club Angel XX
