Getting your hands on a pear martini is no mean feat at G/F. The cocktails are blended using market-fresh fruit, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. “Wilson is kinda picky,” says Charlotte Yuen, G/F’s director, of her husband’s meticulous cocktail list. Aside from martinis ($80), the signature, Dip Nation, is a blushing pink champagne topped with rose petals ($110), and tequila shooters are not the usual rough stuff. Agavera is a Tequila liqueur blended with Mexican flower Damiana tea to create a sweet, smooth mix; hard to find in HK, it’s a favourite with G/F’s laid-back crowd.
Wilson holds his professor at Switzerland’s Glion Institute responsible for developing his love of drinking. He was made to practice at every opportunity – starting with wine at breakfast. “My teacher made me alcoholic,” he insists with a smile. The couple hopes to pass on the love of a good drink, so at G/F the vibe is cosy, the emphasis on “enjoying the process”.
And should the woozy ambience and empty gilt frames hanging on the walls stir creative juices, G/F offers an interesting twist. Upstairs, canvasses, easels and paints await anyone with inspiration and the artistic urge. Why painting? “HK people are too busy,” says Charlotte. “It’s like a release.”
And here we were thinking Causeway Bay was all about whisky and green tea.
G/F bar opens daily at 5pm. Paint sessions are available until 10pm (weekdays) and until 1am (Friday – Saturday). G/F, Dip Nation, 19 Sharp St East, CWB, 2882 1131. |
