November 17-19
Chekhov, the grandfather of realist theatre, gets a local spin in the production i.Cherry by Class 7A Drama Group and Shu Ning Presentation Unit. i.Cherry is based on Chekhov’s last work, The Cherry Orchard, in which an aristocratic family is forced to sell their beloved orchard to the entrepreneurial son of one of their servants. The adaptation transforms late 19th century Russia to modern day Hong Kong and explores the struggle to survive in a rapidly changing society. Thought provoking stuff. The play will be performed in Cantonese at the HK Cultural Centre Studio Theatre. Tickets are $120 and $200, available from URBTIX, 2734 9009. Show times are 3pm and 8pm. |

Immortalised as those wacky guys who sang the theme song to the children’s game show Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?, Rockapella are making their Hong Kong debut at the City Hall Concert Hall. The group, originally comprised of old college buddies (none of whom are left), sang on street corners in New York City until Spike Lee gave them their big break on his show, Spike & Co.: Do It A Cappella. Since then, they’ve toured the entirety of the US and Japan, where they are very popular – perhaps an indication that they’ll make it over here too. See them at 8pm. Tickets are available from URBTIX, 2734 9009 and range from $120 to $280. |
