Twenty-four teams. Three teams a group. Eight groups in all will battle for supremacy in the annual Hong Kong Tens Rugby Tournament. The first day of the tournament is organised in a round robin format, with the results used to determine three tiers of teams playing for the coveted Tens’ Cup, Plate, or Bowl. The best of the best from around the world will be here with teams laden with current and past international players - the quality of the rugby is that good. Defending champions New Zealand Metro will have a difficult road to their title defence, as the luck of the draw (or lack of it) has given them a tough bracket. They will potentially face a strong Hill & Associates Hong Kong Barbarians, then possibly meet the fourth seed Fijian club in the semi-finals. Waiting for them in the final is likely to be one of the perennial Kiwi contenders Aliens or the UK’s top touring team, Penguins. Some argue that the ten’s format is a better game than “sevens”. The longer game and extra players on the field makes the game “tactically more viable”. Everyone has their own opinions, so judge for yourself at the tournament. Admission is by programme ($200), or, if you’re a member of the Hong Kong Football Club, watch the tourney free of charge.
