We Hong Kongers never need an excuse to party. Although most of us here don’t have one drop of Irish blood on us, we’ll still be sporting green and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day like there’s no tomorrow. Many bars in Hong Kong will be having promotions to celebrate the Irish holiday. Lowered tax, St. Patrick’s Day, what a perfect excuse to party all through March.
No surprise that The Whiskey Priest, an Irish pub, will be celebrating St. Patrick’s. If your name is Patrick, or if your birthday is March 17th, you’re entitled to free drinks! Drinking games will be running all night long with giveaways including, of course—Guinness. Also joining in on the fun, Dan Ryan’s Chicago Grill (# 200, Ocean Terminal, TST, 2735 6111 or Pacific Place, Central, 2845 4600) will be giving out free green coloured beer to anyone wearing green. If you don’t feel like wearing green, you can still get the green beer, but you’ll be 38 dollars poorer.
Looking for more than just green beer? Four new, tailor made snacks will debut on March 16th and 17th at The Planter’s Bar (4/F, Eaton Hotel, 380 Nathan Road, 2710 1866)—Irish sausages & prunes wrapped in bacon, pork cocktail finger ribs, crumbed mussels served with a cheese dip, and Guinness stout & honey basted chicken wings. A combination with all four snacks (designed for two people) will run for $138. Other deals include a glass of Jameson with a snack (98$), and 2 pints of Guinness with a snack ($188). From now till the 17th, if you order 6 pints/bottles of Guinness, you’ll receive a St. Patrick’s hat, that way, you can dress and look the part while celebrating.
Head down to Wanchai on Paddies night and you’ll find the crowded Devil’s Advocate (G/F 48-50 Lockhart Road, Wanchai, 2865 7271), offering specials on Murphy’s Irish Stout, Shamrock Shooters, and Bailey’s Irish Cream Cocktails all day all night. If you want to check out live sports, they’ll be airing the following events on the big screen during March: Cricket World Cup starting March 13th, MotoGP starting March 10th, and F1GP starting March 18th as well as continued coverage of the Super 14’s.
More St. Patrick’s Day entertainment can be found outside the Dublin Jack (1/F 16 Lan Kwai Fong, 2543 0081) on March 15th. The band GASRA will perform outside while you can compete in the traditional Irish game of Puc Fada. What is Puc Fada? It’s a game where players use metre-long thick stick to try to hit a ball onto a target. Sounds like baseball to me, except it’s another excuse for the Irish to drink.
In anticipation for the upcoming Rugby 7’s, sports fans in Hong Kong are already feeling the Rugby fever - well the ‘where can i get my ticket without selling my house’ fever. Cool down with these special Heineken promotions. Oh, did we mention you will earn chances to win free tickets to the 7s?
At the Main Street Deli in the Langham Hotel (8 Peking Road, TST), if you order two bottles of Heineken, you will get a scratch card for a chance to win two tickets to the Rugby 7’s. The Novotel Century Hong Kong (238 Jaffe Road, Wanchai) has a similar promotion, for every two purchases of Heineken bottles, Heineken 5, or draught beer, you’ll get an entry into the rugby lucky draw for one ticket to the event.
Spend $500 at the Wooloo Mooloo Bar & Grill (G/F Onfem Tower, 29 Wyndham St, Central, 2894 8010) and you’ll get a chance to draw for two tickets to the Rugby Sevens games. If you’re a regular customer and you want to go to the Sevens, this is a win-win situation—eat, drink, get a chance to win tickets. Obviously the more you spend, the more chances you will get at the drawing, hmmm, more reason to eat and drink…

Friday the 23rd he’ll be at the Cavern (55 D’Aguilar St, Central) at 7pm, then Solas (60 Wyndham St, Central) at 11pm. The is a Red Bull sponsored event. Speaking of Red Bull, Xperience (G/F Asia Orient Tower, 33 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai, 2143 6008)’s promotion in March: Carlsberg bottle-$35 all day or a bottle of Xperience vodka plus 6 cans of Red Bull for $498 all day, every day.
The Igors Group keeps growing, the latest additions are two English pubs. The Pickled Pelicans opened earlier this month, one in Stanley (90 Stanley Main St, 2813 4313), and the second in Central (G/F 43-55 Wyndham Street, Central, 2868 6026). With a wide range of beers, whiskeys and a full pub menu. The two outlets are distinctly different in style, in case you can’t decide which one to go to, the Central outlet uses darker woods, comfy leather armchairs and is more of a whiskey bar, with live sports on TV. The Stanley outlet has a more casual feel, lighter woods and a seaside atmosphere. Either way, you’ll have fun.
Those in search of a different atmosphere can try Zingha (G/F Garley Building, 48 Peel Street, Central, 2522 0544), an African themed bar complete with African music performances. African snacks with one standard drink ($80) or the African special cocktail and ti punch ($50) will make you forget you’re in Hong Kong.
Maya (G/F 68-70 Lockhart Rd, Wan Chai, 2866 6200)’s new promotion on Heineken draught will be $35 a pint during happy hour and $45 a pint during normal, non-happy hours (would that be sad hour?).
