March 30 and 31
With her stunning voice, captivating looks and compelling stage presence, Renee Fleming could be referred to as the current gold standard of sopranos. She is well known in the world’s great opera houses but those less familiar with opera may recognize her voice from The Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King, where she sings in the elvish tongue Sindarin, or from the duet O Soave Fancuilla with Michael Bolton on his album My Secret Passion. The two-time Grammy winner will be joining the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for a night of Richard Strauss, one of her favourite composers. The programme includes Metamorphosen, Vier Letzte Lieder, Zueignung, Morgen!, Cacilie and Der Rosenkavalier Suite. 8pm, March 30 and 31 at HK Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Tickets range from $250-$1,000 at URBTIX, 2734 9009. |

March 30-April 9
If it wasn’t something to see, it wouldn’t be returning for a third time. L’empereur du Chant is Jim Chim’s one-man show in which for three hours he sings, dances and takes off the greats from Aaron Kwok, the king of pop, to Edison Chen, the hip-hop kid. And eventually transforms into a little girl in a pink dress with a lollypop. Is it a parody of HK’s pop scene or, like the scene itself, merely entertainment? See for yourself from March 30-April 1 and April 3-9 starting at 7:30pm. Shows on March 31, April 1, 6 and 8 start at 2:30pm. All performances will be at HKAPA Lyric Theatre. Tickets range from $180-$420 from HK Ticketing, 31 288 288. |

March 29 and 30
Some may think of it as just a lead-in to the Hong Kong Sevens, but the Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens 2007 is a power play in itself. You can see how much grunt these ladies have on March 29 and 30 from 9:30am-4:30pm at So Kon Po Sports Ground, Causeway Bay and admission is free. The cup final kicks off at the Hong Kong Stadium at 6:42pm. Check out the Women’s Rugby section at www.hkrugby.com for details. |

March 30-April 1
And then the rugby/social event of the year! Is there anyone in HK that doesn’t know the Sevens are on this week? Twenty four teams will play from 4:30pm-9:30pm on March 30, 10:30am-7:15pm on March 31 and 9:45am-6:40pm on April 1. Ticket prices have gone sky high on the internet – as usual – but try, if you think it is worth it. For event details, click www.hksevens.com or call 2504 8311. Be prepared to swell the Hong Kong Stadium with 40,000 other rugby fanatics this weekend!

Until April 7
It is a matter of taste. Premiered in Paris in 1994, Art has travelled the world stopping at Broadway, the West End and even Taiwan. Yasmina Reza’s play starts with a debate among three life-long best friends over an extremely expensive ‘painting’ – a white rectangle – one has bought. The art debate escalates into a series of emotional outbursts questioning the nature of friendship and, more importantly, life values. The play is directed by award-winning Weigo Lee for the Hong Kong Repertory. Shows from March 28-31 and April 3-8 start at 7:45pm and on March 31, April 1 and 7 at 2:45pm. Tickets from $100-$200 from URBTIX, 2734 9009. |

April 6 and 7
It doesn’t get much more romantic than a dashing young world-class pianist playing Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with Hong Kong’s premier orchestra. Thirty-year-old Croatian Dejan Lazic has won international competitions playing both piano and clarinet and has worked with major orchestras around the world. He is also a much-admired composer – his first string quartet was composed for the 70th birthday of the great cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich. He joins David Atherton and the Hong Kong Philharmonic in a Swire Maestro concert which includes two of Sibelius’s symphonies, No 4 and 5, marking the mid-point of Atherton’s complete Sibelius symphonies cycle. The two concerts will be on April 6 and 7 at HK Cultural Centre Concert Hall starting at 8pm. Tickets range from $100-$300 from URBTIX, 2734 9009. |

April 12-15
If this is where they do their buying, you might wonder what they want for their birthday – the American Community Theatre celebrates its 30th with Little Shop of Horrors, an adaptation of the Oscar-winning blockbuster of 1986. This black musical hilariously parodies sci-fi films of the 1950s and is directed by Arvin Robles and choreographed by the APA’s head of dance, Mandy Petty. Here’s your chance to ‘doo-wop’ along with the cast – including the 12-foot monstrous man-eater, the evil dentist and the geeky hero, Seymour Krelborn. Shows at the Shouson Theatre, Hong Kong Arts Centre from April 12-15 start at 7:30pm, afternoon shows on 14 and 15 at 2:30pm. Tickets cost $200-$280 from URBTIX, 2734 9009. |

April 18-21
If you are looking for a little fun after all the big arts festival events, Spider Webb Productions’ Take 5 ‘Two’ is five short modern plays each featuring a brace of actors directed by Christy Webb-Gibson. The plays deal with love, loss and departure and the director says they are “interesting, lively and human”. Wait played a manic theatre student in last year’s Take 5 series but this time he is moving up a level – to stage his own play. Shows from April 18-21 at Fringe Club Fringe Theatre start at 7:45pm. Tickets are $150 and $130 from HK Ticketing, 31 288 288. |

ATTENTION PLEASE
The Hong Kong International Airport has imposed new regulations on liquids control on all international flights. All liquids, gels and aerosols in cabin baggage have to be carried in containers with a capacity not greater than 100ml and all containers must be placed in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag of a maximum capacity not exceeding one litre. You will need to show the plastic bag separately from other cabin baggage at the screening point. And remember, only one transparent plastic bag per passenger is permitted. We know it sounds annoying, but to save you time and trouble, make sure you follow the new guidelines before checking-in. For more details, check out www. |
