Movies and the media are the hot industries to be working in; everyone who has applied to work at bc wants to be involved in the ‘glamorous movie business’ and mingling with the stars – pretending it’s work and that you’re not a groupie as you ask for that signed photo/t-shirt at the end of an interview. It’s not really cool, but it makes up somewhat for having to traipse all the way out to Chep Lap Kok for a preview screening of a stinker of a film at 10am on a Sunday morning. We don’t get to choose what we watch, we have to watch everything – and much as we love films, we’re the first to admit some, actually more than a few, of the local films released each year are shite. And we daren’t even ask why the local distributors pick up so much manure from overseas... 2006 wasn’t a great year for the Hong Kong movie industry but the awards season has drawn to a close – the first Asian Film Awards and the Hong Kong Film Awards have engaged in their sycophantic love fest of mutual adoration and unfunny jokes. Bored, trying-too-hard-to-be-funny, host “Fiona, sit”, ditzy, moderately cute co-host “No Daniel, it’s Fiona Sit, sit”… I know, it wasn’t funny the first time. So what’s left? Why the Golden Durians of course, a true celebration of the Best of the Worst of Hong Kong film – and so good an idea the Apple Daily copied it. So without further ado, The Fifth Annual Golden Durians…
