The Angel Interview:
DJ A.L.F

Hey, DJ A.L.F, what’s up?
I am just watching bad television, eating some leftover Easter chocolate and drinking soy milk while talking gibberish to my girlfriend.
Well, you once described drum’n’bass as ‘a basketball racing a slinky down a stairway’ – what’s wrong with you? Got injured playing ball or something?
(Laughs) That’s my description for the music I make. The basketball bounces down the stairs in a constant rhythm yet the slinky throws itself around with bendy rhythms and between them some sort of sonic friction is magically, or tragically, created. You’d probably have to get Grisham from CSI to investigate that mystery.
What’s in your record bag right now?
Just the necessities, but I’m sure you can find a lot more if you were Grisham.
Alright, I guess you didn’t mean CSI when you say ‘bad television’. So why DJing instead of joining the CSI?
Many years ago in the south of Sydney I went to a school party and saw a guy controlling the vibe with music on turntables, and it seemed like he was having so much fun as well… Being a musical lunatic, right then I was convinced that I needed to take charge and play the music that I love to a crowd of people who ultimately have the same passion for that music.
Best thing about being a DJ?
I just have a lot of fun when I play good music wherever I am. I am also the ultimate car trip iPod triple threat battle DJ.
Nightmare on the dance floor?
No, but I’ve got a few Nightmares on Wax! But a girl came up to me once and asked me to sing Happy Birthday to her friend over the mic during my set. She was serious too. Too many bourbons for her, I’d say.
You’ve played with a lot of DJ/musicians – who rocks?
Big Bud recently, actually. He would play a set of downtempo/dancehall and dub at an outdoor stage, then step down and get grimy in the harder room. I love the diversity of being able to rock sets with different genres! Also playing alongside my boys Lucian, Ritual and Vice Versa.
What piss you off or make you nervous?
When I’m hungry I’m upset and I would be very nervous if I was forced to eat bland, tasteless food cooked by people who are not passionate about cooking.
Ah, a food lover?
Well, when I am not DJing I spend time with my girlfriend Rita and eat! I love to eat good food! Not fine dining but real street food, food in different countries; I hear HK’s night markets are excellent! I’m keen to try your seafood dishes!
A celebrity you want to be for a day?
I want to be Moses for a day, splittin’ an ocean in half would be cool. If Moses is already taken on that day, Hercules wouldn’t be too bad either, fighting a three-headed dog would be way cool too!
One last thing: any motto in life?
No, not really but can I make one up now? Eat well, love well, sound well!

Cool. Looking forward to eat, drink and dance with you on May 19 at Yellow Devil!
Club Angel.

Yourspace: Yu Club

We love the vibe in Central at night, but sometimes we just want to sit down with friends or colleagues after work and get away from the crowds. You can’t do that in many clubs in the heart of our city; the new Yu Club is one you can. Clarence Tsui, co-owner of the spot, wants it well known that the exclusive club, which opened in March, runs a membership scheme – and if you want to join, you need another member’s referral. The cozy place is elegantly designed in wood and, with chilled-out, sometimes jazzy, music in the background, gives off a natural, homey atmosphere. Not to be missed are the cocktails – there are 100 to choose from – designed by general manager Jeff, whom some of you cocktail-lovers may know by the signature Jap Jap (sake, lychee liquor and green tea) and Supmoni (Campari, grapefruit juice and tonic water) during his time at Shelter. But what Jeff does best is tailor-make cocktails – tell him what you like and he will blend something just for you. Our drink for the fortnight was not on his list (of course, it was custom made!), but tell Jeff you like strawberry, vodka and chocolate and he may know what to do. A private room with karaoke equipment is available and wine appreciation sessions will be held in future.

Yu Club (13/F Luk Yu Building, 24-26 Stanley Street, Central, 2868 1833). Happy hour from 5-9pm has a buy-one-get-one-free offer.
