Cinco de Mayo
This year, Cinco de Mayo falls on a Saturday, meaning the celebration for the Mexican national holiday should be even livelier than in years past. Although Cinco de Mayo isn’t as big a deal here in Asia as it is in Mexico and the United States (obviously), you can still find celebrations in the SAR.
Over in TST, Don Juan Mexican’s (G6/UG16, Tsim Sha Tsui Centre, 66 Mody Road, TST, 2722 7101) Cinco de Mayo party starts at 7pm. For $388, you get a four-hour all-you-can-eat-and-drink package with live entertainment starting at 8pm. The food is traditional Mexican, like chorizo in breadcrumbs, stuffed chilli with cheese, corn and chilli mini empanadas, and more. For the drink part, your choices are tequila jellies, tequila sunrise, traditional margarita’s, Sol Mexican beer, and frozen fresh oranges injected with tequila. And to add to the fun, a game of piñata – the thought of people over the limit playing piñata – a game where blindfolded people try to break a container stuffed with goodies with a big stick – is truly fascinating.
And in Lan Kwai Fong, California Restaurant & Bar (G/F California Tower, 30-32 D’Aguilar Street, LKF, 2521 1345) will be going all out with a party of sombreros, tequila and hot salsa dancers. Chow down on finger foods like mini tacos, chilli and cheese, and nachos while an international salsa DJ spins music with a
Mexican flavour. The party kicks off at 10:30 pm with an $80 door charge which includes a
Jose Cuervo cocktail.
The party will be wild as Agave (93 Lockhart Road, Wanchai, 2866 3228) celebrates the Mexican National holiday with an all-you-can-eat Mexican taco buffet ($178) from 6pm to 10pm. Once the clock hits 9pm, DJ Kip will spin Latin music for the rest of the night, so all you Latin lovers out there can show
off your moves. Don’t get too full of buffet before you salsa, you don’t want to end up like Ben Stiller’s character in Along Came Polly…
If you ever want to try your hand behind the counter, Devil’s Advocate (G/F 48-50 Lockhart Road, Wanchai, 2865 7271) is giving you the chance. Starting on May 4, the first Friday of every month will be Guest Bartender Night. For the safety of yourself (and every customer), you’ll receive basic training before you’re thrown out there to rake in the tips. Beer of the month is Corona ($25 happy hour, $35 regular hours) and every Thursday is cocktail night where all cocktails are 2-4-1 from 9pm till close.
After a long day of work, relax at Chill Out Sports Bar (G/F 31 Staunton Street, Soho, 2869 6555). On the quieter end of Staunton and with classic baseball cards decorating the walls, it’s for those who want to get away from the crowd, sit, have a cold one, and watch the game. For the month of May, they’ll be broadcasting the NBA playoffs and from 5pm to 9pm every night they’ll have a buy-one-get-one free special on all beers.
The Fong Underground (Basement, 34 D’Aguilar Street, LKF, 2523 2002) is officially up and running after kicking off with an opening party on the 26th of last month. Under the Fong bar, the underground hipster lounge opens at 6pm daily (except Sunday). The sofa with low tables in the interior gives off a relaxing vibe, and light snacks such as the assorted appetizer platter ($138), the Fong pizza ($85), and potato skis ($60) go with the signature cocktails – Bloody Hot Cocktails and Flaming Shots. From Thursday to Saturday, the resident DJs will rev up the pace and turn the experience into an all-out party.
The TakeOut Comedy Shop (34 Elgin Street, SoHo 6220 4436) isn’t a bar, in fact drinks are not even allowed inside. But a little something has been worked out for those that like to be ‘loosened up’ when listening to comedians. The $100 cover you pay for the Friday and Saturday shows will now also get you a free drink down the street at Bhatti Bar (10 Elgin Street, Soho, 2546 0438). For those who think they’re funny, every Tuesday night is open mic night. But we suggest you take the free stand-up comedy class on May 5 before trying open mic…
Has it been a year already since we wrote about Lotus’s opening? Time sure flies when you’re having fun… well, Lotus (37-43 Pottinger Street, Central, 2543 6290) will soon be celebrating their first anniversary on May 23. Details on the celebration will be in the next issue of bc but, in the meantime, enjoy cocktails designed by experienced mixologist Grant
Collins – Lotus cosmo, made with citrus infused vodka with a burnt orange foam, or the signature Lotus martini, made with lychees lemongrass and apple juice. All the cocktails are priced at $80. |
