The hottest new space in Soho doesn’t serve food, doesn’t serve drinks, it just serves laughter. The brainchild of Asian American comedian Jami Gong, known locally for his TakeOut Comedy nights, the TakeOut Comedy Shop has been two years in the making.

For years Gong wondered why Hong Kong had no comedy clubs – “It’s not like the talent or the material isn’t there,” he says. “But comedy nights here are a monthly thing in restaurants or bars – there’s no real space dedicated to comedy, and that’s what I wanted to open.”

The space is intimate, dark and snuggles audiences right up close to comedians – exactly how it should be in comedy clubs: it’s great for interaction between audience and performer, especially for off-the-cuff material. Gong has also been running stand-up workshops for budding comedians of any language and is planning open-mike nights to show up yet more talent.

And although he hopes to install a bar at some point, it’s not currently high on the agenda. As he says, “You don’t need to be liquored up to have a good time.”
