TLMC AT TST’S HKCC
Need some acronym deciphering assistance? Okay, then, here’s the free deal: Tsim Sha Tsui’s Hong Kong Cultural Centre is playing host to a monthly Tom Lee Music Carnival showcasing drum circles and live band performances. This month will see professional percussionist and African music specialist Kumi Masunaga as drum circle facilitator along with performances by seven local bands (CroxxRoads, Persist, Darkness Pool, Velvet Violet, Choco Balls, ToNick and Don’t Panic). The drum circle will get going at 2pm to be followed at 3:30pm by the live band portion of the music fiesta. And for those seeking a further incentive to head out on 3 June to Piazza Area C of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, here’s pointing out once more that there is no admission charge for this effort to liven things up on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront! |

GOLDEN OLDIES
Thirty years ago, George Lam and Teresa Carpio, two leading lights of the Canto pop scene then, held their first TVB concert together. In the intervening years, they have been part of a select group of vocalists who have released both English and Cantonese recordings and have also made notable movie appearances. And although these two entertainers have their own separate successful careers, they still make guest appearances at each other’s concerts.
From 7-9 June, they will be meeting on stage once more for George Lam and Teresa Carpio in Concert 2007, which will feature, along with familiar favourites, a new song entitled Always in My Heart composed especially for the occasion. Showtime for all three concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum is at 8pm. Tickets are from $100 to $400 from URBTIX, 2734 9009.

Underground Cavern
A fantastic night promises to be in store this month at The Cavern in Lan Kwai Fong. Actually, it’ll be as much a Fantastic Day even though the event is set for the evening. The local group that calls itself Fantastic Day – Dee (guitar and vocals), Chi Wai (guitar), Wai Lun (bass) and Simon (drums) – is one of four musical acts that will be playing at Underground 46. Slick and energetic Spodac – comprising Jason, Tommi, Bryant and Nick; a quartet who hail from different parts of the globe – is the other four-piece outfit in the scheduled line-up. They will be joined by Nicolas Wong (on vocals and guitars), Jack Leung (vocals, guitars and keys) and Nadim Abbas (keys and drum programming) of The Yours along with rock chick Jane Eliz, temporarily back in Hong Kong but currently residing and regularly performing these days in her home town of Sydney, Australia.
Underground 46 will get underway on 9 June at 8 pm. Admission costs $80 at the door ($50 for students) for this “Over 18 only” event. |

Bach Choir The name might have you thinking that its repertoire is restricted to the works of the Bach family. However, the Hong Kong Bach Choir and Orchestra boasts a range of programmes that, at the very least, is the widest of any choir in the territory. And that is illustrated by the three showcase pieces of its 36th season’s closer on June 3: Robert Schumann’s rarely-heard Missa Sacra, op. 147, and Hong Kong-based David Francis Urrows’ world premiering Prelude and A Psalm of Francis Thompson as well as J S Bach’s Jesu, Mein Freude. The concert starts at 8pm at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall. Tickets are $200 and $150 from URBTIX, 2734 9009. |

Five Favourites
Jazz saxophonist Katie Pickard
What is your favourite jazz piece of the moment?
Depends on my mood! At the moment I am crazy for Dizzy Gillespie’s recording of Sunny Side of the Street on his album Sonny Side Up. Here we have him singing and playing, Sonny Rollins and Sonny Stitt both running in and out of each other solo-ing. If you aren’t familiar with Sonny Rollings and Sonny Stitt’s playing, you can’t tell when one ends and the other starts. Both on tenor... I love both of their styles and can tell who is who... it’s a fantastic recording.
Who is your favourite jazz musician of all time?
Need I say... Cannonball Adderley. He is the man!
Who is your favourite singer or band at the moment?
I have many – Faithless, Kosheen, Grouve Armada…
What is your favourite holiday destination?
This planet, maybe another one one day!
Which is your favourite of the films you’ve recently viewed?
The Butterfly Effect, Robots.
