The Angel Interview:
Chris Samba

Hi Chris – so you’ve been music director over at Dragon-I for more than a year now. How is that going?
Very good, thanks! It’s been dope to work with some of the top artists in the hip hop and house industry and show them Hong Kong!! We have become world-renowned now on both scenes so I’m kept real busy!

Who have been some of the more memorable DJs you’ve brought to the club since you started your tenure?
Louie Vega for house, Jazzy Jeff for hip hop and Barbara Tucker for live performance … Bob Sinclair for being a top man and jammin the club to the max! Also one coming up not to miss is INDIA live performance of Masters At Work Hits To Be in Love, Love & Happiness, and Can’t Get No Sleep on Saturday 21st July!

If you had to pick your favourite spot to DJ outside of Hong Kong, where would it be?
Melbourne, Australia. The city is amazing and the people are really into the music.

Is “soulful Latino house,” as you describe it on your website, still your musical mainstay? If not, what music tickles your fancy more these days?
As a DJ, I will always just play the soulful latino vibez but when it comes to just listening to music I’m all about neo-soul. Jazzy Jeff’s new album is HOT!

What is the must-have record or mix tape of the 2007 summer and why?
There are too many house tunes to list that will be huge this summer! But a mix tape you should check out is the new Soul Heaven compilation with mixes from Kenny Dope and Karizma.

How would you describe Hong Kong’s club culture now that you’ve been music director at Dragon-I for a while? How does it differ from other cities?
Most Hong Kong people know nothing about music — they just go out to drink! This happens in other cities too but there are still places to just go for music, which is what we try to do at Dragon-I with the acts we bring. Educating the people!

For those who haven’t experienced your DJing, what should they expect?
Soul with a house beat and a groove to make you move!

You’ve had a pretty varied career so far – any plans to do more TV or film appearances? What else have you got up your sleeve for the future?
I have just been made the Asia Resident for the Soul Heaven brand so will be doing tours and mix tape releases with them. I’m going to be in the USA next year for a west coast tour, so might get a little film appearance in then! Watch this space!

What’s your number one tip to surviving the stifling Hong Kong summer heat & humidity?
Best time to check out Europe! That’s what I will be doing this summer with shows confirmed in England, France, Ibiza, Romania, Greece & Russia. If you are in Hong Kong though, just go chill on the Dragon-I terrace and enjoy the vibes!
