The Angel Interview:
Luke Neville

Hi Luke! So, you’ve spun in Hong Kong a good deal before – besides the mild summer weather *wink!* what’s your favourite part about coming here?
Well, apart from the weather, I must say I am a bit of a fan of the food. I’m a bit of a foodie so from a little roadside stir-fry to posh restaurants, Hong Kong has got it all!

You’ve worked with some of the most prolific names and labels in electronic music (Ministry of Sound, Manifesto, etc) and executive produced Café del Mar which went on to sell over 5 million copies. So what would you say has been the highlight of your career so far?
Café del Mar was a highlight. Listening to hours of beautiful music and getting paid to choose what should and shouldn’t go on the CD and then going on to do so well commercially, really was fantastic.

Who are some DJs who’ve inspired you over the years? How so?
Pete Tong and Judge Jules for their commitment and drive… Danny Rampling because he got me into the whole thing.
You’ve played at some of the biggest music festivals in the world (Glastonbury, V Festival, Global Gathering, etc). Do you have a favourite? And why?
I don’t think you can beat Glastonbury, purely because of its history.

In your opinion, which is the best city to see live electronic music these days?
Well, I am a bit biased but I think London is the best. There are always so many gigs and showcases of new and established bands going on. In the last few weeks I have been to see The Chemical Brothers, Calvin Harris and also I DJ’d for Groove Armada at their album launch at the final gig at London’s Hammersmith Palais… which was an amazing gig!

At the upcoming Hed Kandi show at FINDs, you’ll have the ‘2006 World’s Fastest Drummer’ Reese Bridges supporting you on percussion – how did you two hook up?
Reese is good friends with HK’s head of A&R. Being a world-class drummer with an interest in dance music, it made sense to get him onboard with Hed Kandi.

What is the must-have record, mix tape or song of the 2007 summer and why?
At the moment, my Hed Kandi Served Chilled album comes in very handy. I was in Ibiza on the weekend for the opening parties and it was very nice on the iPod while poolside. It also comes in very handy to calm my nerves while stuck in London traffic!

For those who haven’t experienced your DJing, what should they expect?
Well, I like to move through different styles, take the crowd on a bit of a journey but with my ears firmly focused on the dance floor and having a great party.

I read in your bio you’ve been DJing at your own beachside restaurant and bar in Australia for the last two years – is that still happening? What’s the name and location of your restaurant in case we want to drop by and have a bite?
It was in Perth but I no longer own it.
What was the first record you bought? And the most recent?
First record I bought was M.A.R.R.S Pump Up the Volume… still love it! Haven’t bought a record for a very long time as I do record promotion and receive loads of goodies for free. Favourite new tune I have is Armand van Helden’s I Want Your Soul… I am sure it will get an airing while I am in Hong Kong.

Oooh! Can’t wait to hear that tune when you spin 23/6 at FINDS along with Reese Bridges and Arun R. …And especially excited to see this live drumming/DJ action!

Yourspace: HALO

Since opening four months ago, HALO has created what must be the most sought-after membership in town. And unlike other members-only lounge/bars, HALO vows to keep its membership low – close to the roughly 500 it’s currently at to keep the club low-key and relaxing. On top of being über-selective about who it accepts in, HALO boasts exclusive 3-D face recognition technology at the club’s entrance that won’t slide open the dark glass door unless it is sure of the face it sees – and it can’t be tricked by photographs!
Once inside the club, though, expect aesthetic sumptuousness from Japanese designer Hiroui Matsunaka – from the translucent black glass and stainless steel stairways dropping underground, to the purple LED lighting and vivid graphics swirling hypnotically on giant plasma panels. Downstairs, the lounge has a sweeping circular main bar and is divided first into the ‘library/living room’, a cross between plush Victorian and ultra-modern with vintage furniture, chandeliers and erotic black and white photographs and then the ‘garden’ room which is meant to feel like a chateau terrace with its stone floor, green foliage wall and antique garden lamps.
The people savouring cocktails and chatting with friends are painfully gorgeous and successful. Expect to see a gaggle of long-legged models nibbling on mini Angus sirloin burgers or Smores waffle cookies while international DJs keep the ultra-chill feeling of the lounge, at least until it’s time to hit Volar (which has the same owners as Halo) and get shaking.

HALO, Lower G/F, 10-12, Stanley Street, Central, 2810 1274
