Chivas Regal, the makers of the famous whisky, are organizing SOMA – Summer of Music and Art – between the nights of July 12 and 14. July 12 will be a showcase of summer fashion by local brands such as Bread n Butter, Triple 5 Soul, Overkill Inclusion and more at Zenses (G/F Henley Bldg, 5 Queen’s Rd, Central, 2521 8999) with Choi Yat Kit on stage and DJ Remus spinning the music. July 13 is a themed night of hip-hop and R&B at Sugar (1/F On Hing Building, 1 On Hing Terr, Central, 2131 2222), where Rapper Chingy and Clinton Sparks from Boston will be playing an upbeat style all night. SOMA climaxes on July 14 when DJs Flash Brother and Gareth Emery spin trance and electronic music at Adrenaline (Happy Valley Racecourse, 3690 3690,) on the 1st floor while a collection of Hong Kong’s wildest DJs will spin hip-hop and R&B on the 2nd. Not only is Tantra a Hindu practice, it’s also a new bar lounge located in SoHo. If you’re up for soft music, incense and dim light in lush burgundies and maroons – then head to Tantra (Basement Floor, 25 Staunton Street, Central, 3743 0235). Tantra special cocktails, all at $75, include Tantra Kiss (vodka, Cointreau, strawberry juice topped with sparkling water) and Tantra Guru (vodka, apple schnapps, lemonade with fresh green apple). The bar also offers a variety of other cocktails, also at $75 each, such as Ashanti (gin, Cointreau with lemonade) or Mojito (rum, mint leaves, fresh lime topped with soda). To celebrate Canada Day and the Handover, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, is organizing another Canada D’eh 2007! On June 30 the streets of Lan Kwai Fong will be dotted with street entertainers and DJs spinning Canadian music while bars and restaurants around the area will be serving Canadian beer and snacks. The whole event will start at 7pm and go until late, and the ‘dress code’ is anything Canadian or red and white. The celebration is open to the public and free. Also as part of the celebration of Canada Day in Lan Kwai Fong, Chef Wade Watson is putting on an authentic Canadian menu at Lux (U/G, California Tower, 30-32 D’Aguilar St, Central, 2868 9538) on June 30 that will include seafood and meats.
MO Bar (15 Queen’s Road Central, The Landmark, Central, Hong Kong, 2132 0077) is celebrating the launch of Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label becoming its house champagne with a Clicquot Summer Cruise party on July 6. The bash will run from 6pm onwards and the champagne is redeemable at $165 per glass. The entrance is free and dress code is smart casual.
Devils Advocate (48-50 Lockhart Road, Wanchai 2865 7271) is celebrating the Handover anniversary with a Devils Den Colonial Party starting at 11pm on 30 June and featuring the best in colonial drinks and tunes. On 7 July, hoist the Jolly Roger for the Pirates on the Pearl Junk Party. A day long pirate adventure, with an open bar and lots of food, to boldly go where Jack Sparrow fears to tread. Tickets are $550 and you can get more details from the bar. After the fireworks on July 1, head down to Devils for some cocktails, served at two-for-one – complete your celebration.
Africa in Hong Kong? Xperience (G/F Asia Orient Tower, 33 Lockhart Road, 2143 6008) is having an African party ($90 inc one drink) to celebrate the handover. Griot Mandingo, a four piece African band will be playing live with Alama Kante on vocals. Their music is a mesh of West African traditional music called Manding and jazz rhythms. To fit in with the theme of the night, there’ll be an African buffet from 8-11pm, $180. Increasingly popular around the world is the African style dance called Zouk, literally meaning ‘party’, Zouk originated from Guadeloupe and Martinique with English and African influences.
