The Angel Interview: DJ Steve

From July 24th in California all the way to Taiwan on the 29th… That’s a crazy schedule! Is this something you love about DJ-ing? Like getting to go, basically, everywhere?

My schedule from now until then is actually even more nuts when I think about it. I'm in Berlin now, then Amsterdam for the next two days, then Ibiza and then LA.  Then Atlanta, GA, then Edmonton, Canada, then LA, then Milan, Italy, then Hong Kong.  At the end of the day I'm young enough and lucky enough to do this, so I feel fortunate even when I'm exhausted from all the travelling.

What do you think of HK as a place for DJ-ing?
I've never DJ’d there before, but I'm more excited about Hong Kong than any other city because it reminds of the feeling of going to New York for the first time. Small city but with a lot of action.

Do you have a favourite genre in particular?
Electro

What made you start DJ-ing?
I started my record label Dim Mak ten years ago, which eventually evolved into DJ-ing because we started throwing parties for our bands. Then it became an obsession and now I'm doing the DJ-ing as much as the label.

What was one of the most memorable DJ moments you’ve had since you started?
DJ-ing Coachella in front of an entirely packed tent. It’s my favourite festival in America.

Who are some DJs who’ve inspired you over the years? How?
My favourite DJ set was by Boys Noize at last winter’s music conference. Any DJ that makes me want to pee my pants becomes one of my favourites.

What was the first record you ever bought? And the most recent?
Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff Nightmare on my street 45. Most recent was Boys Noize last 12.

For those who haven’t experienced your DJ-ing, what should they expect from you?
For Hong Kong I’ll be playing a full blown electro set.

What is the must-have record, mix tape or song of the 2007 summer and why?Foreign Born "on the wing now" album coming out on Dim Mak in August. It’s the biggest most epic indie record I've heard all year.

What’s your favourite place to DJ? Why?
I don't have one single place. But I do have two residencies in Los Angeles. Dim Mak Tuesdays at Cinespace in LA and banana split sundaes with DJ AM at LAX. Both of them I do with my best friend Mark the Cobrasnake, who shoots them as well.

What the best thing about being a DJ?
Getting people excited about the same music that gets me excited. It’s essentially the same reason why I started Dim Mak records to begin with.

What was the most unusual venue you’ve played at?
In August I’ll be DJ-ing on a beach in Kauai, Hawaii for a Ben Stiller movie. That should be very unusual.

Who is the most inspiring person you’ve played with, and why was that?
I'd say Justice and Busy P. Energy level from the kids put LA on the map when we did the Dim Mak Ed Banger party a few months back.

What’s the next big thing you’re looking forward to?
Hong Kong.
