Muni It

Check it out, wheel it out. Unicycling used to be something you saw in a circus. Hong Kong has a Unicycle Association which holds a unicycle hockey game every Monday at North Point and organizes Muni riding – unicycle hikes and mountaineering. If that sounds a fun thing to do, you first have to buy a unicycle. They are many and varied, the most basic doesn’t even come with a seat. It’s known as the ‘Ultimate Wheel’ and comes in three types: 20-inch, 24-inch and 28-inch. Prices are $518, $791 and $1029 respectively at www.unicycle.com.

Scan It
It is not difficult to find electronic translators on the Internet, each trying to make skipping between languages more convenient and easier. Quicktionary, though, is a pen that scans a word or line of text and translates it directly into another language. Each pen translates text between two languages, chosen from among English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Japanese, Chinese, Korean... The latest device, Quicktionary III, has a touch screen and keyboard for it’s $783 from www.scanningpens.co.uk

Among some fascinating new items in local Goods of Design (GOD) shops are a couple of unusual bean bag chairs – one in the form of a shark, the other shaped like a penguin. As a substitute for that old sofa or sagging chair, they’re easy to fall and relax into but then expect a few laughs when it looks as though the bean bag chairs are having you for lunch. The size of the Sharkey chair is 58x76x86cm and the Penguin 63x90x110cm. Both are $975 and are waiting to swallow you and your wallet at all GOD shops in Hong Kong.

Scent It
Paris’s Crazylibellule and Poppies have come up with an answer to all the sprayed perfume that goes everywhere except on the person using it. It looks like a lipstick but is actually a 5gm perfume stick petite enough for the smallest handbag. Easy to use, it only requires a soft rub to leave you smelling divine. Each of the three mood collections – “exotic” Shanghaijava, “sensual” Poule de Luxe and “delicate” Les Divines Alcoves – has seven ‘flavours’ so there are plenty of aromas to choose from. The scented sticks are available on www.hqhair.com for $118.
