Super Sweats
It may not be the literal meaning of the saying ‘fight fire with fire’, but some people cool down in this hot weather by eating spicy-hot food or even taking a dip in hot water. Meanwhile, the more energetically-inclined will get all sweaty running a marathon! The 7th Annual Chung Hing Cup Tsuen Wan 10K-Super Summer Challenge Race on August 19 starts at the Shing Mun Reservoir Catchwater and will be run over 10km with a 1hr 30min time limit.
What: The 7th Annual Chung Hing Cup Tsuen Wan 10K-Super Summer Challenge Race When: August 19 Where: Shing Mun Reservoir Catchwater. How Much: $120 Enquiries: 8104 8500, run.to/hkmp

Pool Polo
The 9th Asia Pacific Water Polo Tournament is upon us, with teams from Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Guangzhou flying in to try to outdo Hong Kong’s own at the Kowloon Park pool. For those unfamiliar with water polo, it is a combination of swimming and handball with six players and one goalie to a team, the aim being to get the ball into the opponent’s goal as many times as possible – the team which scores the most goals wins. But if you think it is just splashing about with a ball, drop by the pool to catch the sport’s special swimming and hovering strokes, like ‘eggbeater’ and ‘spider’, which you won’t see in any ordinary swimming contest.
What: 9th Asia Pacific Water Polo Tournament When: 7-10pm August 17-19 Where: Kowloon Park Swimming Pool How Much: Free to watch, by invitation to join the games Enquiries: 2572 8594, www.hkasa.org.hk

Swim ’n Win
Think hot summer, think cool water and what better way to get some action while cooling off than with a bit of friendly rivalry in the pool? In an effort to get people fit, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Federation of Tsuen Wan District Sports & Recreation Associations have organized the Tsuen Wan Age Group Swimming Competition which pits swimmers against others in their age group in a variety of categories. Catch the action between nine in the morning and 7 at night.
What: Tsuen Wan District Age Group Swimming Competition 2007/08 When: 9am-7pm August 19 Where: Shing Mun Valley Swimming Pool How Much: $20 per person Enquiries: 2212 9702, www2.lcsd.gov.hk

Social Sevens
The International Rugby Board has announced the venues and dates for the upcoming IRB Sevens World Series – note it in your diary, the Hong Kong leg will be played between March 28 and 30 next year. Meanwhile, we can prepare with events like the DeA Pub 7s to be played at King’s Park on August 25. The purpose of this Hong Kong Rugby Association tournament is to promote social rugby, but who knows what future HK World Series reps will be born out of just such a local competition? Catch all the action from midday.
What: DeA Pub 7s When: August 25 Where: King’s Park How Much: Spectators are free, teams are $3,000 Enquiries: www.hkrugby.com

Medals will be awarded to winners over the courses in various weight and age categories.

Hockey Wheels
It’s difficult enough to make any headway on a cycle with only one wheel but to play unicycle hockey sounds fiendish. Hong Kong has its own Unicycle Association which stages a hockey game for single-wheel pedallers every Monday night at 8:30pm and even organizes unicycle games and races with other countries’ associations. Unicycle hockey is free for anyone who’s interested or, if the sport doesn’t appeal, you can join the more casual Muni unicycle group that takes to hiking on their one-wheelers. Looking for a special and unique sport? This may be the perfect choice for you.
What: Unicycle hockey When: Every Monday 8:30pm Where: King’s Road, North Point at the roller-blading area in a park opposite the Park ’n’ Shop building with a large sunflower How Much: Free Enquiries: www.hkcrystal.com/unicycling/

Beach Fun
Dash down to Discovery Bay on August 19, 25 and 26 for the Water Margin Beach Festival where water babies can enjoy 12 interactive games in the sand and water game zone on Tai Pak Beach. The zone includes four play categories – sand, water, physical and creative. Children aged 3 to 12 are welcome to try out any of the games such as bubble slide, mini water war game and desert spacecraft. The entrance fee is $20 per child with a free Krispy Kreme donut coupon, Komura mosquito repellent patch and souvenirs from Water Margin. And for a bit of photo fun, check out the Mimickers’ Portrait Photography Park on August 25-26 from 11am-6pm. Have your photo taken in a variety of character costumes like Thomas & Friends and Honey Bee against a whole range of backdrops. It’s an instant photo service and your portraits can also be printed on mugs and crystals. Face painting, balloon twisting and candy-making booths are also open all day. To get there, take a ferry from Central and shuttle bus from Tung Chung or Sunny Bay MTR Station. Children aged 12 or under get free ferry rides from Central from 10am-2:10pm on every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday. Spending $100 or more on dinner from Monday to Friday and lunch or dinner on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays at designated restaurants will also give you a free ferry ride back to Central on the same day.
