You’ve performed in Hong Kong recently, but what do you expect on this trip?
I expect to have a great time like I always do when I get there!
How do you feel about the DJ culture in Hong Kong?
The DJs I have heard from Hong Kong are very interesting in that they have their own style of playing music. They play a wider variety of dance music than most countries I have been to.
You have been to many countries. How are the people different when you’re playing music?
The thing about being a travelling DJ is that you get to understand that no two dance floors are alike in this world. For example, people in Hong Kong like a tougher sound than those in Tokyo, but most would think that, since the two cities are not too far from one another, the music would be similar.
I’ve heard that you started your career at the age of 13. How did it happen?
I started out as a DJ at an AM radio station owned by the godfather of soul, James Brown. I used to do special mixes on songs in 1982 for them.
Woo… then how is the work different from being a radio DJ and a club DJ?
I like being a club DJ better. I like watching the people react to what I play.
Where do you usually get your music inspiration from?
The sounds of Quincy Jones, MFSB, Curtis Mayfield and other soul artists are the driving force behind my music. I also have a strong gospel background I inherited from my parents.
Who has inspired you the most?
My wife and kids have been my main inspiration. They listen to my music and give me the support I need to keep on doing what I do.
And how do you describe your music?
I get this question a lot. It’s hard for me to describe because I like a lot of different sounds. I may play a rock record, then a soul record, and behind that a progressive track. It all depends on my mood and where I am playing.
What is the weirdest thing that’s happened to you while performing?
DJing on a stage that almost fell down while I was jumping around in Monte Carlo.
What is the must-have record in this summer?
Alex Wizz – Drummin’ on Defected.
What should those who haven’t experienced your DJ performance expect?
To have a great time!
What do you want to achieve in the future?
I want to do a few album projects within a few years: a DJ Spen & the MuthaFunkaz LP, and one for Thommy Davis!
Spen ur my man of the hour, see u at dragon-i.
