The Angel Interview:
DJ Pete

Hi, Pete! How are you?
I’m great, thanks! Been in Hong Kong for a week now and I have acclimatized myself after coming from winter in Sydney. Hong Kong is such a vibrant city. People are so friendly and accommodating, they make me feel at home and settled in.

Let’s start with the basics – what made you want to be a DJ?I simply love music! Music is one of my passions. Well, I have always been a collector of music… I grew up with the likes of funk and disco sounds. I knew that you could make a profession out of music but never really thought much about it myself, although I already had a cousin doing it then. I used to make music compilations for clubs back in the days I was at Uni; one of the owners loved what I did so much he asked me to DJ at some point. The rest is history, so to speak …

What is the best thing about being a DJ?
Basically, being a DJ is my way of interacting with people and bringing them a sense of gratification by the sounds that I deliver; having the ability to communicate to people through music. Although I’m sure all DJs say that – but it’s true. You can reach out to all different kinds of cultures, no matter in what languages. Music breaks barriers and brings people together.

What kind of music do you usually spin?
I actually play lots of styles. From disco to house, from progressive to tribal, to the very popular electro sound. I have regular gigs in Sydney where I play all those eclectic styles. It keeps me fresh and updated. I just wish I could have brought my entire record collection with me to HK. It is getting easier with the digital age but I still prefer and enjoy spinning vinyl over CDs.

I know you have been a resident DJ in Sydney for a long time. Why Sydney? Are you originally from there?
Born and bred in Sydney. Sydney has always been a great place to party. We have great clubs and fantastic summer festivals. There are at least six festivals in the summer within three months, accommodating 20,000 to 40,000 people. Playing to large crowds is quite a buzz. Also it’s great having the regular partygoers seeing me every week.

If you could DJ anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Somewhere new is always exciting. I’m pretty lucky to be doing something I’m passionate about. This is the first time I’m DJing in HK, so I’m really happy to be here.

You have worked with a lot of DJs, including Roger Sanchez and David Morales. Do you have any interesting stories to share with us?
Yeah, I have supported a number of internationals in Sydney, it’s been a privilege. Hmmm … that depends on what kind of stories you’d like to know. Also it depends if I’m willing to divulge any of those away …

Have you been inspired by any particular DJs?
For sure. The likes of Danny Tenaglia, his deep tribal progressive sound is very innovative and really opened me to a new genre of music when I first heard him play back in 1996. Also Peter Rauhoffer, a really great person, an awesome producer with Star 69 label and a fantastic DJ. We did a gig together in Sydney and the club didn’t close for 48 hours. Roger Sanchez is one of my favourite house DJs, and then local artists like Paul Goodyear – we played together in Arq Club in Sydney for over six years. A few others have inspired me as well because of their new and innovative styles – the lists goes on…

Have you been to Hong Kong before?
Yes, I’ve been to Hong Kong before for holidays and shopping, but this is my first time DJing here.

Anything to say to people who come to your show?
Come to party, dance and have a great time! It’s all about the music and having a wonderful experience each time. See you on the dance floor …

See you at Q on September 01 till 08.
Hugs Angel xxx
