Hockey Ladies
The 6th Asia Cup Women’s Hockey Tournament is the only
pre-Olympic tournament featuring the top Asian teams - China (silver medalist in the last Olympics) and perennial world top 10 teams Japan, South Korea and India. The nine team tournament field is rounded out by Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. All the action takes places at Kings Park where eight days of pool play will sort out who plays who in the knockout stages. This is the largest women’s hockey event in Asia before the 2008 Olympics and should be a closely fought event. Entry is free to see some of the top names in Women’s hockey, so check it out.

And if you are more of a track and field spectator than competitor, you can go to cheer your favourite athletes on without paying a cent for the privilege. What has Gatorade got in common with mountain biking? Dig out those running shoes, shake out the bike and drop into South Lantau Island on September 9 and you’ll find out the hard way. It is, of course, the Gatorade AA Off Road Series Race with an 8km trail run and 15km of mountain biking to get through. The race is open to everyone and will be held in two categories – individual and a relay team of two. An application form has to be submitted online, followed by payment before September 5 or a $100 fee will be charged for late entry.

Racing for Charity
The Hong Kong Jockey Club is going all fuzzy hearted before the serious business of the new horse racing season and organizing a charity race for trainers on September 9 with a prize of $200,000 going to the charity of the winner’s choice. The contest will be run at the Sha Tin course just before the opening race of the new season and, in the spirit of generosity, no betting will be accepted for this one race on the day. That doesn’t mean, of course, it will necessarily be without excitement – take your pick of the field and you can still yell for your favourite till blue in the face as the horses barrel over 800 metres to the finish line.
