The Find: Doraemon Mini Pool Set
Final Price: $15
Where found: 7-11

Fifteen dollars doesn’t get you very much in this town and if you are looking to brush up for your next big pool tournament you’d probably want a bigger budget. With that in mind, if you set yourself in a locked room in the basement without any further distractions, there is a chance you can actually have a semi-normal game with this mini pool set without the balls rocking back and forth seemingly of their own accord. Okay – no, there isn’t – there is a natural incline to rival the slopes at Aspen and we still don’t know what the spring on the cues is for. But maybe, like its namesake, there is more to this set than meets the eye… or maybe it is just dirt cheap.

There is a story, probably apocryphal, about a pair of visitors to Hong Kong who, seeking a taste of the Hong Kong nightlife, rode the MTR all the way to Kwai Fong because they mistakenly assumed that was where Lan Kwai Fong was! In case anyone does have such illusions, we’d like to point out that the Kwai Fong MTR station is named for Kwai Fong Estate, a large public housing estate to its northeast, and indeed more apartments than bars and clubs will be found in its vicinity. Since the station opened in 1982, though, this area has become a hub for transportation and more, with the sizeable Metroplaza shopping mall which contains a multiplex (the Broadway Kwai Fong), eateries and retail outlets. The LCSD-operated Kwai Tsing Theatre that opened in 1999 is just opposite the MTR station and has an events calendar that includes modern dance along with Chinese opera performances.
