The Find: Star Wars Clone
Wars Bust Ups – Anakin Skywalker
Final price: $29.90
Where found: A Chinese model shop on Queen’s Road East
We haven’t watched Clone Wars, that cartoon spin off of George Lucas’s epic Star Wars series, here in the office, so looking at this Anakin Skywalker bust up, we’re hoping that is the reason why it makes little sense to us. So he’s got blue tribal paint stretching across his arm; maybe he is auditioning for Apocalypto Part 2. Then there is the hair: as if Episode III’s Anakin wasn’t ridiculous enough (was that an in-joke we missed out on?), forget about the light sabre, he just needs to swing his mane at someone and they wouldn’t stand up until next Tuesday. The scar going down his eye – it’s freaking Harry Potter six inches lower. And then there’s the cloud he is floating in and the menacing data board with eyes leering behind him. Again, we suppose we’d have to watch the cartoon to understand. But at least one thing remains as stoic as ever – the light sabre is as iconic as it was 30 years ago.

This is the new KCR station way up north straddling the border with China. Straddling so much, in fact, we couldn’t find a way out of the train station without having to go through immigration and, as we hate immigration, we opted to take pictures from afar. To put it kindly, our experience of this station can be summed up in one word: dystopian. Commuters funnel out of the train and down the stairs into border control queues as the omniscient KCR voice booms directives through speakers above. Yet the station is huge and there are not enough people to fill it. On one side, seen from behind glass walls, is sprawling marshland. On the other is Huanggang, the Chinese city of trucks and transport. And when we decided we’d had enough, we couldn’t even get out. All escalators run down and the stairs have ‘No Entry’ signs above them. We informed an official of our predicament and all he would do was vehemently question what we were doing there and where we had we come from. You know how they say people get unfriendly on the mainland? It starts here.
