HIKE FOR THE FUTURE
The 2008 version of the annual hike for green power awareness, now in its 15th year, will take place on March 1, but entries close on January 25 for a maximum of 3,000 participants.
Courses are 50km, 25km and 10km circuits along the HK Trail. The entry fee is by donation, with the minimum for individuals and teams (3-4 persons) hiking the 50 and 25km circuits being $1,200 per person. For the 10km circuit, the minimum donation is $800. Full-time students can enter any course for $700. Last year’s drive saw 3,000 hikers raise more than $3 million to be used in developing environmental education in schools and the wider community. Since its inception, the event has raised over $26 million. Head to the website to download an entry form.

RALEIGH RACE
Be you an expert mountaineer or casual hiker, there is something to test your chops this March with the Raleigh International Mountain Marathon (RIMM). In 2008, the annual overnight mountaineering fundraiser will be turning its focus to overseas and local youth development projects organized by RIMM. On March 15-16, several courses ranging 50-60km for the ‘elite’ class to 25-30km in the ‘country walk explorer’ class will start from an undisclosed location, to prevent potential pre-routing cheaters. The ‘elite’ category requires proof of serious experience, check the website for details, otherwise any team of 2 men, 2 women, or 1 of each can enter any category. The easiest routes allow teams of 2-4. Company teams can only enter the ‘country walk’ category but can also compete in the Corporate Cup. The application fee is $200 per person, with a minimum fundraising target for each person being $1000 ($500 for students). Entry is $8800 per corporate team. Application closes January 13.
