ANGEL INTERVIEW:
BIG BUD

It’s the first time for you in Hong Kong. What brings you to our fair city?

I’ve been on the road for three months in Oz/NZ and managed to hook this gig up through my Sydney/HK contacts. Really looking forward to it – I always enjoy playing somewhere for the first time.

What kind of response do you expect from the local crowd here?
Not sure to be honest, but I’ve heard from a few other DJs that you get an enthusiastic crowd. I do know I’ve got some wicked tunes at the moment and have had some awesome parties on the tour so far. So I can’t wait to hit HK.

Drum’n’bass started in England but it’s an established genre worldwide now. What has inspired you the most throughout your career?
Yeah, I’ve been in the game for about 15 years or so. Never thought about stopping. And I think it’s just the music that inspires me to keep on going. I think it’s better than ever right now and I never have a problem finding enough great new music to play.

Which is the first album a new drum’n’bass fan should buy?
Obviously it should be a Big Bud album! There are five out there to choose from but I’d recommend the Fear of Flying double album. Seriously though, there are so many quality albums out there but I guess a new fan should pick up a few comp[ilation]s and get an idea of the broad spectrum of drum’n’bass to see what buzzes them the most.

Is there anyone you would like to work with in particular in the coming year?
Well, the idea I’ve got for my next project is an entire album of colabs. I meet so many talented heads on my travels that I wanna bring them all together on one project. Some will be well known, others not so much but that’s my plan.

Where do you reckon has the best drum’n’bass scene?
Oh man! Impossible to answer really. New Zealand is probably my fave country to visit and play but there are such strong scenes all over the world. In St Petersburg, Russia, for example they regularly have drum’n’bass parties with crowds of 30,000! And of course the UK scene is still jumpin’!

What do you reckon has been the greatest achievement of your career so far?
Working with jazz legend Weldon Irvine was probably my musical highlight. But also the Belize Project where I spent a month in the Caribbean working with guys in the poorest ghetto I’ve ever seen but with a serious amount of talented musicians.

What would you say to those Hong Kongers that will come to see you on the 19th?
Come down, get your dancin’ shoes on and be sure to come and say hello and buy me a foxy brown! It’s gonna be a big night – in fact, it’s actually the last show of a three-month tour so I wanna end it on a high!
Angel xx
