What better way to start twenty-08 than with some great live music. Vibe Jazz and Live Music Club (1/F, Parekh House, 63 Wyndham Street, Central 2530 0968) took over the former Bloomers space in September last year and has been cranking out quality nights of live music ever since. Vibe’s talented house band features the vocals of general manager Freddy T and plays a mix of jazz, blues, R&B, rock and even a little country from Monday to Saturday. It’s also open mic Mon-Thurs.

Acoustic music is the order of the day too at Dusk till Dawn (G/F, 76 Lockhart Road, Wanchai, 2528 4689) and Insomnia (38-44 D’Aguilar Street, Lan Kwai Fong, 2525 0957) where it’s all unplugged from 7.30pm to around 9.30pm Wednesday through Saturday and its happy hour as well. After 10pm daily the regular bands play until the wee hours of the morning.

Over in TST, Sticky Fingers (66 Mody Road, TST, 2369 8981) and its sister bar Spicy Fingers (78-82 Lockhart Road, Wanchai 2861 3588) in Wanchai have live music every night from 10-15pm till 5am - with multiple bands playing a range of pop and rock classics, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

It’s welcome back to Post 97 (UG/F, 9 Lan Kwai Fong, 2186 1837) which reopens later this month. Inside sources speaking on the condition of anonymity (not really, but I’ve always wanted to write that) are talking about a major revamp to the interior but still keeping the uniqueness which has made Post a Lan Kwai Fong landmark.

Superbowl Monday
For those still undecided whether they will drag themselves out of bed early to watch the Superbowl on February 4, perhaps Dan Ryan’s (Pacific Place, 2485 4600; Ocean Terminal, 2735 6111) annual Breakfast Party will make your decision a little easier. Line your stomach with a Windy City hot dog ($55) or perhaps a heartier scrambled eggs with sausage and bacon ($69) before you grab a Bloody Mary ($70). Those less keen on alcohol so early in the morning have the option of the usual breakfast beverages such as coffee, tea and juice.

Joining in on the Superbowl spirit, Champs Bar (B1, The Charterhouse Hotel, 209-219 Wan Chai Rd, Wanchai, 2833 9086) is opening at 7am for the early Superbowl kick off in Arizona. For $150, Champs will serve you breakfast, coffee and Bloody Mary all day or, if you prefer something lighter, consider the coffee with a bacon and egg sandwich for $95. All coffee refills are half price. Those simply wanting to enjoy the game with a few drinks will find all standard drinks at happy hour prices.

If your favourite is a pick’n’choose meal to start the day, try Amici’s (1/F, 83 Lockhart Rd, Wan Chai, 2866 1918) Superbowl buffet breakfast. Running from 7-10am, the buffet includes ham, bacon, sausages, scrambled eggs, hash browns, fruits, and an unlimited supply of coffee and tea. Whilst stocking up on the food, patrons can watch the live broadcast of the game on two 80in screens and a plasma TV. At a price of $88, bookings are highly recommended.

RIP
The Kangaroo Downunder in Wanchai is no more, dead, deceased, it started pushing up the daisies on new year’s day so for those Aussies who want to celebrate Australia Day on 26 January, you’ll need to head to the LKF or TST branches.
