ANGEL INTERVIEW:
Randall

Hi Randall, where are you and what are you up to now?

Well thanks! I am just building on the label Mac2 Recording with a few new artists. The website www.mac2records.co.uk is up and running now, and I am putting out a mix CD through Nu Urban Distribution (UK). I am calling it Street Rollers compilation mix CD with 20 tracks on two CDs. It should be out on the street in June or July. Besides that, things are peachy!

You used to play in warehouse parties and now you play in front of like 1,000 people. Do you miss those warehouse parties?
No, not really. It was a different time then. I still get a buzz in a smaller club vibe because you can interact with the crowd and you are cut off from people in big events. But there are still clubs I play that have that old skool warehouse vibe to them. So basically you have to adapt to what is going on now. That is what makes you a DJ.

Do you remember the first time you DJed?
Yep. 15 years old in a house party in the East End. We were late and had to set up sound with partygoers in the house waiting for us. Classic.

I have read that independent record stores in London are dying. What do you think?
You tell me. Or better, ask Andy (Outrage) ‘coz he deals with sales on J-Tek. I am just a DJ who plays the music that has to break to the masses!

But you had your own record shop too?
Yeah, we had a shop in the ’90’s in the East End of London called De Underground Records. It was myself, Cool Hand Flex, Uncle22 and Flex's brother, Mike. But as we were all on different paths we shut it down and started up Mac2 Recording in 1996.

How was it then?
We started the record shop as a place where DJs could hang out and get tunes, as the pirate radio era had been clamped down by the DTI (Dept of Trade and Industry). It was hard at the time but it was for the love of the music and that’s why we opened the shop.

Your coming gig in HK - what are you expecting from us?
Something different! Looking forward to checking out new gadgets, of course. I have been to Japan so it will be very interesting to see how they take to the J-Tek sound as it’s a fresh project. It will be wicked as I have never been there before!

If one day you don’t DJ anymore, what would you do?
Not gonna happen, bro! Beats ‘til I die!

Well thanks for talking to us...
No problem, man! See you on June 13.
Randall and Outrage will bring their jungle/drum’n’ass sound to Club Flamingo on June 13. DJ Cookie, Teem, Blood Dunza, Saiyan and Fat Demon will support. The party starts at 10pm and entry costs $200 (includes one drink).
