The Find: Roulette set
Final price: $25
Where found: Traditional stationery store in Queen's Road, Sheung Wan

Macau used to be a budget option for Hong Kongers looking to spend a weekend away from the Fragrant Harbour. But, increasingly, with all the new multi-star hotels and casinos peppering its radically changed landscape, travelling to the Las Vegas of the East makes for quite the expensive affair. You can save some money yet still enjoying some casino fun with this $25 Roulette wheel! Yes it’s cheap and a little bit tacky but as with most findery items a lot of fun can be had with some friends and a little imagination...

Unlike the Chinese name Cheung Sha Wan which literally means ‘bay with a long beach’, all to be seen when you step out of any of the MTR station’s exits is not a sandy bay complete with a beautiful sunset, as you might hope, but blocks upon blocks of public housing estates. Originally named So Uk (So House), Cheung Sha Wan nevertheless is replete with a rich local culture, from old gentlemen playing Chinese chess in the gardens to mothers always ready for a chat about the bargains at the market. If that doesn’t interest you, the Lee Cheng Uk Han Tomb Museum will be a pleasant surprise. Home to a Han Dynasty burial site that is one of the oldest historical sites in Hong Kong, it is located Tonkin Street, a street more often in the news for the discovery of unexploded bombs and cannon shells buried by the British army during World War II. And should you crave something more contemporary, on the other side of Cheung Sha Wan Road, a traffic-filled avenue that connects to the even busier Nathan Road, you will find the eye-catching Asia Golf Club and the wholesale vegetable and poultry market.

A tragedy.
