For all of the land reclamation that has taken place on the southern side of Victoria Harbour over the years, North Point (Pak Kok in Cantonese) remains the northern most point on Hong Kong Island. Should you find yourself in this bustling area served by the North Point MTR station, you can go bargain hunting at the outdoor markets that stretch from Chun Yeung Street into Marble Road or check out a Chinese Opera performance at the Sunbeam Theatre. While doing so, you may hear conversations being conducted in Fukienese and Shanghainese – as befits this part of the Fragrant Harbour, nicknamed ‘Little Fukien’ and also ‘Little Shanghai’ in the wake of historical influxes of Fukienese and Shanghainese immigrants into it. At the end of your visit, there are plenty of public transportation options to get you out of the area, including at the North Point Ferry Pier where rides across to Hung Hom, Kowloon City and Kwun Tong can be found.

Look at this fatty, greasy roast pork with its tender flesh and crispy skin… No, this is not a food column, but if your stomach churns when you spot this piece of meat, you have to believe your eyes can deceive. Its miniature size notwithstanding, this porky phone ornament looks exactly the same as roasted pork in a Cantonese restaurant – for which you may either hate or love it.The idea of food-shaped geegaws is nothing new: I’ve seen sushi-shaped erasers, for instance. But what makes this porky bit catchy is its verisimilitude. Try putting it on a dish and decorating it with a few veggies, and you won’t be able tell it from the real thing, despite the fact that it lacks the fragrant meaty smell. But because of its all-too-realistic appearance, it is a bit weird – almost nasty – whether to hold in your hand or to hang on your cell phone!
