Though it may be hard to see past the sun-eclipsing residential high-rise complex upon surfacing from the Mei Foo MTR stop, the station’s Exit A leads to a haven for exercise enthusiasts. Walk east towards Broadway and you’ll end up at Mei Foo Plaza, whose 2nd-floor annex is home to the 24-lane Mei Foo Bowling World, decorated in neon hues and open from 10am to 1am or 2am depending on the day. Another option is to take a right at the same exit – by cutting south through the wet market at the base of the flats, you’ll end up at the spacious, butterfly-filled Lai Chi Kok Park. Apart from the usual jogging trails, children’s playgrounds, and football fields, the park also features tennis courts, a swimming pool, a skateboard area with a considerable collection of ramps, rails and halfpipes (skateboarding and roller skating are not allowed in any other park areas) and an amphitheatre as well as Lingnan Garden, a traditional Chinese garden with pagodas and bridges stretching across a pond, lined with a pebble pavement, stone statues and bonsai trees. After exploring the park, visitors can unwind at the single-theatre Century Cinema (also on Broadway), where tickets cost only $30 a show.

The Find:The Give You a Surprise box
Final price: $2
Where found:Grocery store on Tong Shui Road, North Point
As things become more expensive and money devalues, one can’t do much with $2 these days besides take a ride on Hong Kong’s cheapest mode of transport, the tram. But in a grocery store in North Point, as I scrabbled among all the gadgets and household products, I came across this mysterious box. Yes, it was only $2 and had “Give You a Surprise” written all over it. I wondered what kind of surprise could come with a price like that, so I opened the box and an ugly black scorpion. And, yes, my scream was loud and long even though it was only made of rubber! Believe me, this was the best scare I have ever had for a mere $2 – if it doesn’t frighten the pants off your friends and family, they should have a good laugh when it pushes their scream buttons. Don’t take it to work unless you have a really understanding boss, though -– you may find yourself stung with a note saying “You’re fired!”
