Opening the 22nd Macau International Music Festival is the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Leonard Slatkin. The choir performances of MIMF will all take place in local churches, including St. Florian Boys’ Choir conducted by Franz Farnberger singing in St. Joseph’s Seminary Church. The group has providing church music for almost one thousand years. The programme is in four parts: Songs of Heaven which includes the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah; The ‘Sound of Music’ by the Riverside of The Blue Danube; Opera Highlights; and Global Classical Music featuring folk songs from around the world like Auld Lang Syne and Sakura. The 6th Macau A-Ma Cultural & Tourism Festival continues this year at A-Ma Cultural Village on Mt Coloane. A-Ma, being a significant religious figure in coastline communities for its blessing on ships, is widely worshiped in Macau. The international renowned Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet will be performing at the Dom Pedro V Theatre. Founded in 1986 Switzerland’s Kolsmicha - The World Quintet - piano, clarinet, flute, bass and drums - will be playing at Mount Fortress. Born in ancient Greece’s open air theatre’s mime has become the most universal of theatrical genres. Theatre of Silence’s Greek mime, Seeking Oedipus is based on the myth of King Oedipus who murders a man who happens to be his father and marries the love of his life who happens to be his mother. Canada’s third largest symphony orchestra, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, will be under the baton of celebrated British conductor Bramwell Tovey. The programme includes Jeffrey Ryan's The Linearity of Light, Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D major, op. 35 as well as Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 in D minor, op. 47. The highlight of this performance lies not only with the music but with the Grammy winning Hilary Hahn, the violinist who was named ‘American's Best’ young classical musician by Time Magazine in 2001.
