The band’s first gig?
Nic: The first gig of The Yours was in the band rehearsal room. It was a private gig for friends only. Don’t remember much of it really, probably it was really fun!
What was the last record you bought/downloaded/lagged?
Nic: The Kills’ Live Session EP
Ho: Gang Of Four’s Damaged Goods 7” vinyl
Jack: The Cramps’ Rockin ’n’ Reelin In Auckland New Zealand vinyl
Nadim: Jun Togawa’s Suki Suki Daisuki
What are you currently reading and what do you think
about it?
Nic: Dragonball Z – it is a classic!
Ho: Ezra Pound’s Literary Essays. Nice cover!
Nadim: JG Ballard’s The Atrocity Exhibition. Ballard is one of my favourite sci-fi authors.
Jack: Tim Burton’s The Oyster Boy. I am the Oyster Boy.
Most embarrassing thing that happened during a gig?
Jack: Nic once left his phone in his trousers – someone called him during the show and there were glowing lights in his crotch.
Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be and why?
Nic: Although I adore many musicians like Lux from Cramps, The Kills, Robert Smith among others, I don’t want to be any other specific musician because I think each musician should have their own way of expressing their music.
What songs would you like played at your funeral?
Jack: Skeeter Davis’s The End of the World
Nic: Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive
Ho: Dream City Film Club’s If I Die, I Die
Nadim: The Pixies’s This Monkey’s Gone to Heaven
Upcoming projects for The Yours?
Nic: A new CD! This time we are giving up the shoegazing sound. It will sound totally different from our debut EP. You will hear more post-punk, ’60s garage sounds in our next album.
Ah Ho: Get a girlfriend.
The Yours are Jack (vocals/guitar), Nic (vocals/guitars), Nadim (bass) and Ho (drums). The post-punk/shoegazing four-piece, together with Downer, will support Beijing-based trio Ourself Beside Me on April 18 at Backstage. Formed by former Hang on the Box guitarist Yang Fan, drummer, chorus emi and bassist Xie Han, Ourself Beside Me is heavily influenced by the sounds of New York’s East Village in the ’70s and ’80s and released a debut self-titled album this year. The HK leg of their national tour will kick off at 10:30pm – entry is $150 with one drink at door.
