Lots of Bass

words romana dalgleish

DJ Scene is a man on the move, playing over 100 shows a year mostly in the US. He is ducking over to Hong Kong for one of his renowned crazy nights this May and he talks to us of judging music by its cover, a love of technology and scratching over entire songs before he knew better.

How would you describe your sets?
Lots of bass with drinks in the air!

Best set you ever played?
Last night (haha). I’m constantly trying to challenge myself and evolve. My goal is to always do better than the night before – like lifting weights, you just keep adding more and more weight as you get stronger.

First time you took to the decks? The very first time I DJ’d?
I’m pretty sure it was a house party and all I had was a bunch of old records. I remember people were pretty pissed that I was playing a bunch of unpopular music and trying to scratch over entire songs.

Does the first album you bought ever make any appearances?
First cassette I bought was INXS Kick. I got it because of the Vision Streetwear skateboard that was on the cover. I didn’t even care about what was on the actual tape. I ended up loving the album and playing it over and over again. I definitely still love dropping Need You Tonight in sets.

What makes your sets ‘the craziest shit you can imagine’?
I love tossing in music and genres of music that you might not normally hear in a nightclub. It’s always a good vibe and I love having fun with it!

Dreams of collaborating?
There are a number of people I’d love to work with but if I had to name just one, I always thought it would be amazing to work with Timbaland. Big fan of everything he does – he always pushes the envelope.

When you’re not being DJ Scene?
At home I love to play with our dog, BBQ, watch movies, keep in touch with friends. Somehow always downloading music too – seems like it never stops.

If you weren’t a DJ?
I would definitely be something with computers and music. I love technology and staying up on new media.

DJ Scene will be at Dragon-I on May 23. Entry is $300, 2543 8856
