China Behind
Director: Shu Shuen
HK Film Archive, Cinema, 7:30pm, $30, Tel: 2734 9009
In the early stages of the Cold War, the colonial government of Hong Kong, fearing the spread of communism, was especially hard on films from Mainland China. Things changed in the 1970s. Films with negative portrayal of China or Taiwanese films with anti-Communist themes were frequently banned. China Behind, the first local film that depicts the cultural revolution, was made in 1974. It was banned by the government and not shown in Hong Kong until the 1980s.
The Red Detachment of Women
Director: Xie Jin
HK Film Archive, Cinema, 2:30pm, $30, Tel: 2734 9009
This film, about a woman's battle with a landlord in China, was itself in the center of a battle for expression in Hong Kong. In 1965, the left-wing press launched a campaign accusing the colonial government of bias against Mainland films, citing the ban on The Red Detachment of Women as example. Censors barred the film because of its depiction of the Civil War, fearing that dialogues criticizing the Nationalist government would
stir emotions that may erupt into riotous acts

‘This is the greatest requiem ever written’, says Music Director Yip Wing-sie of Verdi's Messa da Requiem, a view shared by many musicians, critics and music lovers alike. While some critics of his time called it ‘An opera in ecclesiastical robes’, no one could argue about the drama in this large-scale ‘Mass for the Dead’, which has continued to ‘affect people and move them deeply’ ever since its première in 1874. Prize-winning operatic singers from Italy join the orchestra and the Opera Hong Kong Chorus in this grand venture.
