Trinity Theatre’s musical Sing A Long has twice proved to be a nostalgic hit, particularly for those who grew up with and loved Cantopop of the ’80s. Through the songs of Leslie Cheung, Danny Chan and Anita Mui among others, it tells the story of the loves, friendships, families and dreams of a group of friends born in the 20 years before the millennium. This, the third run of the show, may be an even greater attraction than its predecessors with Twins’ sweetheart Charlene Choi and pop/rock princess Kary Ng as guest stars.

Film
A Wreath for Madame Kawakita: Boy
Director: Oshima Nagisa
HK Film Archive, Cinema, 5pm, $50, Tel: 2734 9009
Based on real-life events, the story focuses on an itinerant family with parents who train their small boy to fake accidents by running in front of passing cars and extracting medical compensation from the confused drivers. Oshima again mines the lower depths of Japanese society, finding in it compelling evidence of the ills that have inflected Japan on its march towards modernity.
A Wreath for Madame Kawakita: Conflagration
Director: Ichikawa Kon
HK Film Archive, Cinema, 2:30pm, $50, Tel: 2734 9009
Conflagration is based on Mishima Yukio's best-selling novel The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, which was inspired by the actual 1950 burning of the temple, a national treasure. The film portrays the psychological disintegration of a young temple acolyte, his descent exemplary of the post-war generation's disturbing cynicism and the temple the target of his scorn emblematic of society's ills
A Wreath for Madame Kawakita: Intentions of Murder
Director: Imamura Shohei
HK Film Archive, Cinema, 7pm, $50, Tel: 2734 9009
The central character of Intentions of Murder is one day brutally raped by a burglar. Instead of maintaining customary honor by killing herself, she slowly finds a way towards self–realization. Earthy, unprincipled and unattractive, this most unlikely of movie heroine is nevertheless a woman of strength and perseverance. The film was shot entirely on location, including all indoor scenes.
A Wreath for Madame Kawakita:
Into the Picture Scroll: The Tale of Yamanaka Tokiwa
Director: Haneda Sumiko
HK Film Archive, Cinema, 12:30pm, $50, Tel: 2734 9009
Haneda ingeniously animates a scroll painting into a captivating story. She transposes onto celluloid the famous 12-scroll, 150-meter Yamanaka Tokiwa parchments, created by the painter Iwasa Matabe and considered a national treasure of Japan. The film closes in on the images, revealing details not ordinarily seen by the naked eye, adding compelling drama to the story of the legendary hero Ushiwaka-maru.
