Wear It
Nowadays nothing seems to escape the deadly tentacles of the omnipotent Hello Kitty. If you’re a member of one of the many “I Hate Crocs” Facebook groups, think again – Crocs has finally gone that extra step and launched a range of Hello Kitty-inspired shoes, exclusive (unsurprisingly) to Asia. Available in both adult and kid sizes, the Crocs come in two colour combinations and sport the face of our twinkle-eyed icon set in a repeated background of her ribbon or favourite apple. And if one Kitty doesn’t quite cut it, dress up your pair with matching Jibbitz charms featuring our beloved Kitty again in six endearing poses. Or why not go the whole way and snap them onto your purses, mobile phones… the world is truly your Hello Kitty. Get a pair at any Crocs store in HK for $298 (adult) or $268 (child).

Animate It
Brave the swine flu epidemic this July 31 to August 4 and head on down to the 11th Ani-Com & Games Hong Kong exhibition, one of the best-known expos in Asia. This year it will be held at Hall 1 of the HK Convention & Exhibition Centre. Always a much-discussed event among our city’s younger generation, the exhibition is a playground for comics and games lovers, with a sea of new and innovative products and activities to keep people entertained. Themed “Fountain of Creativity”, this year’s exhibition will introduce the First HK Supernova Original Comics Contest to encourage more young talent in addition to the usual competitions like the Gundam Modeling Contest and the Cosplay Competition. Check out www.ani-com.hk for more info.
Discover It
You wouldn’t realise it, but Hong Kong has a great underwater life with a mixture of about 300 tropical and temperate marine species such as corals, seagrasses and fish. You can learn about them from August 1 to 23 when the East Point City mall in Tseung Kwan O will be holding Hong Kong’s first marine conservation campaign. The exhibition, titled East Point City – Loveth Thy Neighbour – Dive Fest, will cover six zones and include a display about the local rare marine species and also a diving pool where you can learn how to dive under professional instruction. International underwater photographer Carlos Villoch will also be on hand to share his 20 years of photographic experience and present an exhibition of his works.

Bling It
‘If you can’t spend it anymore, wear it!’ is the motto of L’Avare, a jewellery brand created in 2005 by French designer Olivier Lafond. When the Euro replaced the French franc, Olivier came up with the idea to give a second life to the discontinued currency by incorporating its coins in his new line of jewellery. Five, 10, 20 and 50-cent coins bought from French numismatists are reworked, re-silvered and treated with rhodium before becoming bracelets or pendants priced, ironically, at $500-$2000. Check the line out at No 217, 2/F, T-yama, 80 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Now if only they cost as much as their coin value…

Appreciate It
Think beige walls, possibly a sofa or two, a coffee table, a hot receptionist if you’re lucky… and welcome to your standard office lobby. Back in 2006, Sino Group initiated the Art in Hong Kong programme to bring art into people’s daily lives by brightening up public places, such as office buildings and shopping malls, with paintings etc. This year Sino Group is collaborating with EDGE Gallery to bring a series of exciting exhibitions titled CHKC Art Walk Series to the lobbies of China Hong Kong City’s five office towers. Make sure you look out for Holiness, the current exhibition featuring 16 colourful and dramatic paintings by young Japanese artist Seiko Fujioka (China Hong Kong City Office Towers, 33 Canton Road, TST).
