In this hilarious and moving satire, the beleaguered comedy troupe writer who, when submitting his latest script for government approval, finds himself having to go toe-to-toe with a newly appointed hard-nosed government censor. As he diligently attempts to rework his play, incorporating the censors' multitudinous and unconventional edits, the most unlikely partnership starts to flourish and the men become engaged in their own world, crafting the funniest play they can imagine, whilst the spectre of the outside world threatens to destroy everything.

This episode examines women's status in the family and society during the four years before the 1997 Reunification. Like Kwok Fung-yee of Veggie Queen and Opera Queen, Yang Kuei-mei plays an amateur opera singer. Director: Allen Fong
HK Film Archive, Cinema, 5pm, $30, Tel: 2734 9009
Shot both on set and on location, Below the Lion Rock features different stories with a regular cast. Fong quickly became a director after working as Production Assistant for less than a year and Detoxification and Childcare are his first directorial attempts. Below the Lion Rock: For My Brother
Director: Allen Fong
HK Film Archive, Cinema, 7pm, $30, Tel: 2734 9009
As with Nightwalker, this episode also questions the functions and responsibilities of the media. Staff of a television station hold divergent views on how to present a feature about a disabled athlete, who makes every effort to prove to his gangster brother that disability is no obstacle. The ending is left open to create more room for reflection.
Below the Lion Rock: New Life
Director: Allen Fong
HK Film Archive, Cinema, 7pm, $30, Tel: 2734 9009
Director Allen Fong likes drawing on real-life events and characters for his dramas, and New Life is one of his early successes. A former drug addict Shortie is greeted with icy stares wherever he goes. A bleak portrait of the subject of rehabilitation, New Life nonetheless paints the dark side of reality with strokes at once tragic and comical.
Below the Lion Rock: Nightwalker
Director: Allen Fong
HK Film Archive, Cinema, 7pm, $30, Tel: 2734 9009
The protagonist is a young reporter who will go to any lengths for inside scoops. His endeavours eventually lead to the tragic death of a child who longs for human connections. The entire film is shot at night to allude to city folks' lack of direction as if they are heading nowhere in the dark. Failure of the reporter to facilitate better understanding and create human barriers instead calls for even more contemplation.
Below the Lion Rock: The Wild Child
