bc would like to congratulate Guinness on Arthur Guinness Day. Two hundred and fifty years – wow, just wow. To kick-off the party, 250 bottles of Guinness Anniversary Stout will be free at Delaney’s, Dublin Jack, McLovin’s Tavern, McSorleys and PJ Murphys from 5:59pm on September 25. That’s a lot of beer, so there’ll be plenty to go around – be cool and enjoy the party as you raise a toast to Arthur. Throughout September enjoy some great Guinness-flavoured dishes at Delaney’s – the fish in Guinness batter with chips on Tuesdays in Wanchai is delicious – and Dublin Jack is offering a plate of Arthur’s tapas, while over in Kowloon you’ll find half a dozen Irish rock oysters on the half shell.

If you’re feeling as though the week has gone to the dogs, then head down to the Dog House (72-86 Lockhart Road, 2528 0868) on September 18 for a night of Brazilian fun. The party starts at 10pm and goes on till late with samba girls, capoeira, maculele and a live band.

Corona had gone traditional this year and is toasting Mexican National Day with cold beer and a mariachi band to get your feet tapping and the party swinging. The mariachi sound really is one of the most infectious happy beats around and you can groove to it on September 18 at Joe Bananas (9pm), September 20 at Lux (8:30pm), Neptunes (10pm), Traffik (11pm), Sugar (midnight) and on September 21 at Agave Wanchai (10pm). There’ll be Corona promo girls with premiums, drink coupons and lots of fun.

It’s on limited distribution at present but – and whisper it quietly – there’s a new beer in town. Carlsberg Lite, the low carb pilsner, is 4.1% ABV and contains 30% less calories than regular Carlsberg, while retaining the brisk freshness and flavour. How do they do it? A lighter original gravity is used in the manufacturing together with an extended fermentation process to form almost the same quantity of alcohol as in equivalent normal beers. The beer is not allowed to fully ferment, though, and unfermented sugars balance the drink’s flavour for a pleasant mouthfeel.

The anniversaries are coming round thick and fast; it only seems like yesterday that Mes Amis opened its first outlet in Central to be quickly followed by the iconic Corner Bar in Wanchai. But it’s been 10 years, and to celebrate, it is Sept10ber and happy hour all day, every day this month at Mes Amis (Wanchai, Mongkok, TST), Amici (Wanchai and Mongkok) and Tapaz (Mongkok).
