SUMMARY:Where Were You?
DESCRIPTION:Many years ago\, Matt Friedman\, a prominent human trafficking activist decided he was going to write a book that would help readers to understand the horrors of sex trafficking. Many of Friedman’s interviews took place at shelters in Nepal that provided rehabilitation services to survivors who had escaped from India’s sex trade. While most girls agreed to tell Friedman their stories\, there was one young woman\, Gita\, who repeatedly declined his request for an interview. Every time he saw her\, she appeared angry and completely withdrawn. But during all of the other interviews\, she sat off to one side and listened to everything that was being said. On the last day of Friedman’s visit to her shelter\, Gita came up to him and said she had changed her mind – she would give an interview. Everyone was surprised. \nOver the next three hours\, Gita described one of the most horrific experiences Friedman had heard to date. As part of Gita’s trafficking experience\, she had been tricked\, deceived\, betrayed\, raped\, tortured\, abused\, and diseased. It seemed to Friedman she had suffered the worst of everything. At the end of the interview\, he sat there speechless\, not sure how to respond. Finally\, he thanked her for sharing her story. There was another long pause. Her eyes were dark and deep with fury. Not knowing what else to say\, Freedman said to her\, “You must be so mad at the traffickers for what they did to you.” \nShe looked at him and the others in the room. Her eyes suddenly lit with fire. “I am not angry at the traffickers. They did what traffickers do. I am angry at you!” she shouted\, pointing her finger at Friedman and the others. “Where were you when I was in that brothel?” she kept pointing at Friedman and the others and asked. “Where were you and everyone else when I needed you?” She paused and took a few deep breaths. \n“Why are you here doing this project? Why are you not down there helping my sisters now? They are in the same situation I was in. Everyone knows what is going on. Everyone knows it is wrong. Why is no one helping them? How can such terrible things happen without anyone doing anything? I am not angry with the bad people\, I am angry with the good people. Where were you? Where was everyone? Why did no one help?” \nThat day\, a survivor spoke for herself and for so many others. She “called us all out\,” asking a fundamental question: “Why doesn’t the world care enough to stop this crime against humanity?” It was a good question\, and still is. That moment was an epiphany that helped Friedman understand that the world – collectively and individually – has a responsibility to address this problem. Whether the victims of human trafficking and forced prostitution are in India\, Nepal\, China\, Africa\, Latin America\, the United States\, or anywhere\, human trafficking shreds the fabric of all that is good and decent in this world. It is not someone else’s problem. It belongs to us all. \nTo raise awareness on modern day slavery\, ten local bands composed original songs inspired by theme “Where Were You?” Written to sensitize people about the horrors of human trafficking through music. The bands first competed in the battle of the bands\, an original song contest in a live show format\, on 6 June\, 2015. \nHong Kong’s first ever Anti-Human Trafficking themed CD is released at a concert where four of the bands featured on the cd will perform. 100% of ticket and merchandise sales will go to NGOs that work together in fighting human slavery. \nBands featured on the CD: Meraki\, Zino Chan\, Sparklez\, Spam\, Same\, Arsonist\, RF2\, Sparklez\, Unity Band\, Oikos and J3MI. \nWhere Were You\n852 Freedom Campaign\nDate: 7:30pm\, 13 November\, 2015\nVenue: Island ECC\, 2/F 633 King’s Road\, Quarry Bay\nTickets: $20

SUMMARY:Terry Fox Run
DESCRIPTION:The Terry Fox Run is an annual charity event that originated in Canada\, inspired by the story of 22 year old Canadian Terry Fox and his ‘Marathon of Hope’. A run across Canada by Fox\, who’d had his right leg amputated because of cancer\, to raise awareness and money for the treatment of cancer. \nTerry started his run in St. John’s\, Newfoundland on April 12\, 1980 with little fanfare. Although it was difficult to garner attention in the beginning\, enthusiasm soon grew\, and the money collected along his route began to mount. He ran close to 42 kilometres a day through Canada’s Atlantic provinces\, Quebec and Ontario. However\, on September 1st\, after 143 days and 5\,373 kilometres\, Terry was forced to stop running outside of Thunder Bay\, Ontario because cancer had appeared in his lungs. An entire nation was stunned and saddened. Terry passed away on June 28\, 1981 at the age 22. \nAccording to the organisers the “Terry Fox Run in Hong Kong is volunteer-organized with no budget for expenses and none of the proceeds raised through the event are used to cover costs. All funds raised will go towards a local Hong Kong based cancer research project.” \nAs it celebrates 35 years\, the Terry Fox Run is no longer just a Canadian tradition but rather an annual event that has taken place in every corner of the world\, dedicated to eradicating a disease that knows no political or geographic boundaries. This year’s event is the third Terry Fox Run Hong Kong. \nIn addition to promoting public support for cancer patients\, last year’s Terry Fox Run Hong Kong raised almost $550\,000 and had over 600 participants. The total amount raised was donated to the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s latest cancer research project\, which aims to use new technology in analyzing circulating tumor cells\, ultimately improving care for cancer patients. \nThe 2015 Terry Fox Run is a 3km\, 5km or 10km non-competitive\, family-oriented run or walk. With no fee for participation or minimum donation required. Everyone is welcome to participate\, from running enthusiasts to families with kids \nTerry Fox Run Hong kong\nDate: 10am – 3pm\, 7 November\, 2015\nVenue: Renaissance College Hong Kong\, 5 Hang Ming Street\, Ma On Shan\nTickets: Free\, register here Terry Fox 2015

For now\, let us refer to the host using that acronym\, but in case you are interested\, they come from Imperial College London and wholeheartedly hope to strengthen the attitude and values among students as part of promoting public awareness and social service. This time\, the focus is on the issue of eye care\, global blindness\, and the honourable work carried out by ORBIS\, the beneficiary for the Concert. \nYes\, all proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to ORBIS. But this is a Concert after all\, so what do you get? \nWell\, the experience is priceless. \nFour youths\, represented by the four seasons. Their story will be weaved right before your eyes\, follow them on their intriguing trip of self-searching\, and perhaps you will find a piece of yourself in them as well. Many influential figures will appear along the ride\, passing on their message and teachings through the universal language of music. \nSUPPER MOMENT will make an appearance\, along with the enthusiastic choral group GREENERS’ SOUND. International award-winning pianist\, violinist\, composer and conductor JOHNSON LEUNG HOK KIU will grace them with his mastery of the piano. UK-based 5-piece punk/soul band ANIMAVIVA will bring their different and unique touch\, contrasting local talent SIDICK LAM who claims that if we ‘give her a guitar\, she will sing till the world ends’.
