Revisiting the Glory Days – The Legacy of Leslie and Anita

To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the passing of superstars Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) will present a twenty-film retrospective entitled Revisiting the Glory Days – The Legacy of Leslie and Anita from April to December  The programme is also part of the first Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival.

The opening programme (also the opening programme of the Hong Kong Pop Culture Festival 2023) on 22 April is When Leslie & Anita Meet Hei & Gin at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Grand Theatre when Gin Lee will perform four theme songs from the films of Cheung and Mui ahead of a screening of Who’s the Woman, Who’s the Man (1996) – the last feature film co-starring the two superstars.

When Leslie & Anita Meet Hei & Gin

The following night, 23 April, the 4K restored version of Rouge (1988), another film co-starred by Cheung and Mui, will screen at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Grand Theatre. The remaining films will be screened from 29 April to 30 December at HKFA Cinema.

Cheung was a talented and versatile actor who brought various types of characters to life… Whether it be the unrestrained playboy in Days of Being Wild (1990), the fierce yet gentle undercover cop in Moonlight Express (1999), the highly skilful thief in Once a Thief (1991), the ingenuous scholar in A Chinese Ghost Story (1987) or the cunning rascal in Long and Winding Road (1994).

Mui starred in many roles…. as the psychologically conflicted Gu Manlu in Eighteen Springs (1997), the top-class etiquette coach in The Greatest Lover (1988), the tough woman facing a marital crisis in Midnight Fly (2001), the heroine who personifies both strength and gentleness in The Heroic Trio (1993), the legendary spy in Kawashima Yoshiko (1990), to cross-dressing as the incompetent and skirt-chasing king in Wu Yen (2001).

As well as being actors Cheung and Mui were massive pop stars. The film Behind the Yellow Line (1984) marked their first acting collaboration and its theme song, sad but charming, was the first film duet by the two superstars. Mui took the role of a pop diva in the song and dance film The Musical Singer (1985). In For Your Heart Only (1985), Cheung’s hit songs intertwine closely with and drive the plots of the film. The theme song sung by him in He’s a Woman, She’s a Man (1994) became a Hong Kong pop classic. Cheung applied his artistic flair through directing, editing and scoring for the final sequence of Viva Erotica (1996).

The duo’s later films are also part of the programme, including Inner Senses (2002), about the dark side of human nature with Cheung’s powerful performance in expressing inner struggle and despair. In Mui’s July Rhapsody (2002), she delicately depicts how a middle-aged woman faces obstacles and melancholy in her natural performance.

Some screenings will be accompanied by pre-/post-screening talks hosted by Stanley Kwan, Joyce Yang, Gordon Chan, Chan Hing-kai, Janice Chow, Sam Ho, Clifton Ko Chi-sum, Dr Charles Cheung, Teddy Robin, Johnny Wang, Thomas Shin, Dr Ng Chun-hung, Shu Kei, Poon Hang-sang, Dr Angela Law, Eric Tsang and Matthew Cheng.

Apart from Viva Erotica which has no subtitles, all the other films have Chinese and English subtitles. Tickets are $85 for When Leslie & Anita Meet Hei & Gin and $45 for other screenings.

As the police watched on videoing fans to ensure patriotic complaiance over 12,000 were on hand at the Hong Kong Stadium for Hong Kong‘s first home game in front of HongKongers since 2019.

Poor finishing denied the home team and its supporters a chance to really celebrate as coach Jorn Andersen’s new look team spurned chance after chance.

“I want to be positive, we played a really good game,” Andersen said. “The first half was excellent. We attacked a lot, we created a lot, we defended high, we won the ball high and were creating chances. But today we were not so lucky and that’s why I’m not so happy today. We couldn’t make the goal that the Hong Kong fans wanted to see today.”

“We got very big support from the spectators. They pushed us to the front and we tried our best, but at the end we couldn’t make that first goal to make everyone happy. I’m sorry for that,” Andersen added.

In reality, while a win would have been nice the score was irrelevant; that fans could finally watch their team in person meant everyone was a winner.

Over 400 fencers will take part in the Hong Kong Open Fencing Championships this weekend at Shek Kip Mei Park Sports Centre. Competition takes places in three different weapons epee, sabre and foil with points scored each time you hit the correct part of the body.

bc spoke with the HK Fencing Association (HKFA) and one of Hong Kong’s leading fencers Cheung Siu Lun to learn more about the sport.

How easy is it for someone to pick up fencing, say for example having watched it at the Championship or on tv?
HKFA: Due to the safety issue, it is not recommended to learn fencing without any guidance. Thanks to Blue Cross Insurance who are sponsoring the Championships we’ve got more chances to popularise this sport and give learning opportunities to public.

Is there social fencing or is all about competition?
HKFA: Not really, it’s only competition and learning. The Association conducts many training courses in different level.

What should spectators look for when watching fencing? So they can enjoy it more?
HKFA: It is really an open-ended question, just like people watch soccer. For fencing, it is an exciting competition with lots of technique and skill, it really depends. Audiences can try to know the scoring system firstly, so that they will understand better when watching the competition what the fencer is trying to do and the places on the body to hit for a score. Because scoring is done differently in the three variants of fencing.

Is fencing a unisex sport or can men not fight women? If not why not, from watching fencing on TV brute strength doesn’t appear a big factor to the fencers?
HKFA: It’s because men, in general, are physically superior to women–in terms of physical, athletic performance, usually for professional competition, like other sports, we will separate it to Men and Women fencing.

Are HK fencers limited in their achievements through lack of elite competition?
HKFA: We don’t agree with that, our fencers work very hard and have a great record in the international competition, please kindly refer to the achievement we made: www.hkfa.org.hk/hkach.pdf

Thirty-one year old Cheung Siu Lun is one of Hong Kong’s senior fencers having started in school, Cheung has gone on to represent Hong Kong in multiple tournaments winning numerous medals.

cheungsiulung_2016Do you fight in all weapons? Or specialise in one? If one, why did you choose that weapon?
Cheng Siu Lun: At high school when I started to learn to fence the only option was the foil, so there is no chance to learn epee and sabre until latter.

How different are the skill sets and requirements between the weapons?
Cheung Siu Lun: Of course there are some differences in terms of techniques and especially the scoring system. First, these three kinds of categories are pursuit of explosive force, concentration, and control power. For Foil the technical requirements will be relatively high one, because the scoring position is relatively small, while the epee is relatively easy to score, as long as the sword spikes in any part of the body can score. The sabre needs a high explosive force and concentration.

What are the core skills / attributes that differentiate a top fencer from a good fencer?
Cheung Siu Lun: As a successful fencer, time management is important, no matter for his own life or during training and competition. Besides, hard-working attitude and team work spirit is also important. We need to communicate with coach and teammates to establish mutual trust between each other, so that we can build a better team, and to set our own short-term or long-term goals.

Match Report: Hong Kong 2-0 Singapore @ Mongkok – 11 October, 2016

https://youtu.be/81T_BzqUMb0

Hong Kong beat Singapore 2-0 in an international friendly at Mong Kok Stadium. Alex Akande got the hosts on their way with a clinical strike four minutes before the break. A powerful drive from Huang Yang in the 70th minute to put the result beyond doubt.

Irfan Fandi, the eldest son of Singapore legend Fandi Ahmad, made his debut as the visitors showed plenty of energy and initiative in the opening exchanges. However, the home team gradually forced their way into the contest. In the 33rd minute, catching the defence napping, Sandro threaded a neat through-pass to Akande. But Lions’ keeper Izwan Mahbud was alert to the danger, and raced off his line to deny the Kitchee striker.

Hong Kong broke the deadlock eight minutes later when Lam Ka Wai lofted the ball between two Singaporean defenders and into the path of Akande who did well to control the bouncing ball before coolly firing into the far corner.

Buoyed at taking the lead, and with the majority of the 4,136 fans cheering them on, the hosts looked the likelier of the two sides to score after the break. Singapore did have an opportunity to equalise in the 69th minute when the lively Iqbal Hussain latched onto Shakir Hamzah’s cross only to blast wide of the near post.

A minute later and Hong Kong scored their second. Roberto’s floated pass was nodded down by Jaimes McKee to Akande, who turned provider by laying the ball off for Huang to drill an unstoppable effort past Izwan.

Deep into injury-time, Singapore had a chance to pull a goal back as Iqbal forced Yapp into a flying reflex save that denied the Lions an opportunity to salvage some pride with a consolation goal.

China’s Racist Attack on Hong Kong

china v hong kong

This is the poster for China vs Hong Kong (qualification rounds for Russia 2018) from China’s FIFA:
“Don’t underestimate any opponents. People of this team (Hong Kong) have black skin, yellow skin and white skin. Facing a team with ‘SO MANY LAYERS’, we must strengthen our defence a bit!”

The poster emphasises that the Hong Kong team has black, yellow and white skins, “layers” means races and classes.

The HK Football Associations’s rebuttal to China’s racist ad:
“Don’t let others look down on us! Our team has black, yellow, and white skin, but all of us are here to represent Hong Kong. All HKers should support us!”

The hashtag on the bottom reads “Support our own”.

The HKFA refuses to use the “official” name of “Chinese Hong Kong”.

Hong Kong 0-7 Argentina @ HK Stadium – 14 October, 2014

A second string Argentinean team barely got above walking pace as they out-classed a hard working Hong Kong side in the HKFA’s Centenary Match. A crowd of 20,000+ got what they came for though when Lionel Messi dazzled in a 30 minute cameo that had the crowd roaring in delight. Messi scored two goals – the first a lovely twisting run through the heart of HK’s defence – and set up a third to bring the enthusiastic crowd to life.

In truth it wasnt a great game, the gulf in class just too big – but Hong Kong could and should have scored on the counter-attack. In bringing his star names of the bench to entertain in the last 30 minutes, the fans were entertained and left happy. What more can you want from a friendly!
