Hong Kong New Year Countdown
The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) hosted the New Year Countdown at the Chater Road Pedestrian Precinct in Central for the first time. The event featured a mix of live music and a light show, bringing locals, visitors and global audiences together to welcome 2026.
Air Supply and local artists Jay Fung and Cloud Wang performed to entertain the large crowds.
A themed “New Hopes, New Beginnings” three-minute light show was staged on the façades of eight buildings featuring giant countdown clocks and dazzling light patterns to welcome the New Year.
If we’re being honest, the event was kinda pathetic compared to New Year’s Eve countdowns across the world. An oppourtunity to promote Hong Kong to the world, while entertaining HongKongers, sadly wasted.

Displaced Cambodians
The border squabble between Thailand and Cambodia has got significantly more violent recently, with the Thai air force bombing deep into Cambodia. Unfortunately, the coverage in the global media – BBC, CNN, The Guardian etc – has so far failed to cover the impact the ‘war’ is having on the people living in the border provinces.
Over 525,ooo Cambodians, including more than 160,000 children, have been forced from their homes. Many are sheltering in temples with no work, little food and facing an uncertain future.
Business owners and people from across Cambodia are stepping up to help. At KC Restaurant and Cafe in Battambang, staff spend several days cooking eggs, fish and chicken for those in need.
Numerous local aid agencies, including Pa Many, are visiting temples around Siem Reap to distribute food and bring emotional support to children and adults alike. At Wat Chaw Srei Vibol bc found over 260 families and 800 children sheltering in temporary ‘caravans’ made from farm equipment or sleeping in the temple buildings.
Not only do the volunteers bring food, but they also try to bring hope to the children by integrating them into activities with local children.
