Haiyan Help!

If you are organizing a fund raising event or providing free services (without any strings/conditions attached) to help those affected by typhoon Haiyan, then please send the details to [email protected] and bc will freely help publicise and raise awareness for your aid events/efforts.

There is a lot of corruption within the Philipines and the scale and breadth of this natural disaster will undoubtedly mean lots of people looking for a cut to “help” ensure the aid money and goods get to those who need it most… opening your wallet to help is a start, but take the time to make sure your aid gets to the people you think it’s going to!

The relief organisations would prefer cash but if you want to make a donations of canned goods The Afreight Group – have said people may bring their donations to the Afreight office in Central or their warehouse in Ap Lei Chau:

CENTRAL Shop 371-372 Worldwide Plaza 19 Des Voeux Road Central, HK

AP LEI CHAU Unit 16, 4/F, Oceanic Industrial Centre #2 Lee Lok St., Ap Lei Chau, HK

Donors will be asked to register their names and donation particulars so that Afreight can include these in their report to the Philippine Consulate General, which is monitoring donations from the HK community.

Afreight will deliver the donated goods to any of the following relief organizations:
Philippine Red Cross
MA Kapuso Foundation
ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya
as they have the capability to reach the intended recipients in the Visayas directly.

The Roundhouse – Taproom

The Roundhouse - TaproomBarbecue and beer – as old as time and still a perfect combination! While The Roundhouse – Taproom awaits its Liquor Licence and the 25 craft draught beers arrive… yes 25 the attraction of the soft opening period is the Texas Barbecue and although it’s been open only a couple of weeks returning customers are a sure sign it’s not only bc who thinks the food is finger lickin’ good.

In a welcome break from the current local trends of dainty, intricate food served in minute portions The Roundhouse – Taproom offers US grade beef and pork smoked in-house over oakwood and served up naked to allow the meat to be savoured and enjoyed. The oak smoked meat, sold by the ¼ and ½ pound, smells gorgeous, looks delicious, and tastes fantastic.

If, when looking at the chalkboard menu you’re not sure what you want then try a combo platter ($320) – two smoked meats or the homemade sausage, a fried pickle and two side dishes – chzy squash, potato salad and pinto beans. The beef brisket’s crisp smoked, exterior hides moist marbled beef which melts on tongue; the ribs, best eaten by hand have just enough stick to need a little pull with the teeth to separate meat from bone. The pulled pork is beautifully cooked and full of flavour – but it can get a little lost amidst the stronger flavours of the mixed platter.

All the meats are smoked daily on-premise, with Texan Head Chef Austin Fry starting the process at 5:30am every morning. So unlike many restaurants, there’s a finite quantity each day and things can run-out, especially the signature beef short rib (top photo).

For those who don’t enjoy beer with their bbq, The Roundhouse offers free, yes you did read it correctly, free soda with all combo platters! And there’s no service charge! So remember to tip if you enjoy the meal.

And if you don’t have time to dine-in, there’s always take-away…

Gai Wu 20-5 DEA – 2 November, 2013

Lau Sze Wa

Wesley Feausi, coach of Gai Wu, reflects on their hard fought 20-5 victory over DEA “We always knew DEA were going to be a difficult prospect, and with home advantage, as such, this game was always going to come down to the team who made the least mistakes, defended well and scored points when down the right end of the pitch.

DEA started as expected, running hard and direct with their attack, stand-out performers were Ellie-May in the forwards and Natasha in the backs. We were able to defend well in the opening encounters and were lucky enough to come away a single try in the first half from winger GMA (Lau Sze Wa), who would add two more in the second-half to complete her 2nd hat-trick of the season. Half-time score 5-0 Gai Wu.

The second half proved to be no different to the first, both forward packs working hard cancelling each other out. It was a fantastic battle of two sides with excellent attacking weapons out wide as well as the hard nose grinders in the front row and ‘game breakers’ in the back row. DEA scored a try early in the second half giving them early momentum only for Captain Jay, Vice Captain Tammy and Christy to rev up the DEA girls to return the favour. GMA scored her second and third tries of the game bringing her try tally into double figures for the season and we were searching for that 4-try bonus point to make-up for the lapse in defence earlier. Rainbow Leung did exactly that, scoring our 4th try of the game. Full-time score 20-5 Gai Wu.”

Wesley continues “It was a great game for the fans and shows that women’s rugby in Hong Kong at club level is raising the bar each year complementing the HKSI who have initiated a professional program for elite women’s players. Gai Wu has many young girls new to rugby but they have stepped up this season and are playing hard and enjoying the games – although we have plenty of areas to improve the enthusiasm and commitment is there.”
