Russian Film Week: 18-25 March, 2015

Russian film week takes place from the18-25 March as part of the Festival of Russian Culture in Hong Kong – an event presented by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Consulate General of the Russian Federation.

The festival features Russian cinematographers: Evgeniy Abyzov, Mikhail Gorevoy, Pavel Derevyanko, Maria Smolnikova, Vladimir Sterzhakov, Artem Tkachenko.

Chinese Documentary Festival 2015 - Call for Entry

The 8th Chinese Documentary Festival will be held in September 2015. The Festival comprises two sections: Competition and Special Selection. The Competition section is now open to submission. Documentary filmmakers from all over the world are invited to join.

Since its inception in 2008, the Festival has drawn the attention of filmmakers from around the world, especially those of mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Thanks to their support, the Festival is attracting bigger audience each year and has become a major event for Chinese documentaries.

Founded in 2004, Visible Record, a non-profit art organisation, has dedicated itself to promoting Chinese documentaries. The Festival is supported by the Lee Hysan Foundation, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and Art & Culture Outreach.

Entry Requirements
1. Documentary films produced between 1 January, 2013 and 15 April, 2015
2. Such films should contain no less than 50 percent of dialogues in Chinese (including dialects) or issues on Chinese society
3. Feature film: 60 minutes or above; Short film: 59 minutes or below

Submission
Please obtain an application form by downloading from the Festival website (www.cdf.asia) or by sending an email request ([email protected]). Five duplicates of the film (on DVDs) must be sent along with the completed application form to Visible Record before the 15 April, 2015 deadline.

Cheung Chau Diary 2014 Outdoor Screening – 8 November, 2014

The Cheung Chau Diary 2014 Outdoor Screening, part of the Chinese Documentary Festival has been rescheduled to Saturday 8 November 2014. The programme will include the new films of 2014 as well as works from Cheung Chau Diary 2013. There will also be a performance by Cheung Chau musicians.

Earlier this year veteran documentary filmmakers from Hong Kong and Taiwan worked with 20 young participants at the “Young Talent Training Camp” on Cheung Chau as they explored the island for interesting film topics. After eight days of heat, rain, frustration and the confusion of filming, they present us with 10 short films that make up Cheung Chau Diary 2014.

The films include people features such as Brother Key, An Ambulanceman, Postman and The Ukulele. Luthier; A Qilin Story of Two Generations, Flower Banner and Man Beside the Sea on preserving traditional businesses; Family on what it is like to be the small shop owners on the island while The Pier and Too Many Cheung Chau Guests are about life on the island. Through the films discover more about the different facets of life in Cheung Chau and the sense of community and tradition that lies in the heart of Hong Kong.

Selected shorts from last year’s “Youth Talent Training Camp” including Life, Neighbourhood and Brother Wah, which portray friendship among neighbours; Uncle Fai and The Hair Salon, which examine old traditional shops; The Savage in the Hill and A Man from Cheung Chau, which are character sketches, and Insects and On the Wretched Lives of Fish, which explore nature. The films investigate, each with its unique style, a broad range of subject matters, from intriguing characters to important social issues to the vanishing culture of old districts.
