HK SciFest 2021

With “Technology For Our Future” as the theme the HK SciFest 2021 aims to encourage the public to learn more about the latest achievements in science and technology as well as the development trends of the future in order to take advantage of technology wisely for dealing with future changes and challenges.

During the festival, 26 March – 11 April, at the HK Science Museum new exhibitions will explore different aspects of ‘science’ including the world of flowers, encounters between amateur naturalists and nature, the application of science and technology in agriculture, the future of seed technology, as well as global climate change.

Highlighted events this year include Fun Science Carnival, Croucher Science Week, and a series of STEM x SCM online activities which looks to expand and engage public interest in and understanding of science, technology, engineering. There are also guided tours, science lectures and workshops aiming to provide diverse science experiences for people of all ages.

The 11 April, closing event Technologies of Gyroscope and Robotics (broadcast live on www.youtube.com/user/hksciencemuseum) will have robots performing Tai Chi and tightrope walking to demonstrate how they maintain balance using gyroscopic technology.

Housing Authority to Reopen Outdoor Recreational Facilities

The Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) announced today that from 11 February 2021 leisure facilities including badminton courts, table tennis tables, tennis courts, gateball courts, fitness equipment and peddle walk trails… will REOPEN!

The HA reminded people that the group gathering ban is still in force and that unless exempted, group gatherings of more than the permitted number in public places are strictly prohibited.

Members of the public are required to wear a mask when using these facilities.

Larger Than Life: The American Civil Rights Movement in Documentaries

As part of Black History Month, Larger Than Life: The American Civil Rights Movement in Documentaries takes place online from 25 February to 1 March 2021. To raise awareness and promote cultural and racial harmony in Hong Kong, this free film showcase introduces major figures in the African-American civil rights movement from the 1950s to the 1970s, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, the Black Panthers and Shirley Chisholm.

Their philosophies still affect racial, class and gender relations in America and the world to this day. The documentaries explore their influential roles in contributing to the social progress towards greater political and cultural understanding. There will be after-screening talks and a talk on racial relations in Hong Kong.

Christmas Butterflies

It seems a hard place for businesses to survive but the new Lee Tung Avenue has consistently offered creative and instagramable decorations. The latest for Christmas is ‘Butterflies of Hope’ and bc’s Christie Liu and Munchie took a look…

Created by award-winning Hong Kong visual effects director Victor Wong. The display which stretches along the whole street features a 7-meter stained glass butterfly surrounded by 350 LED butterflies. The kaleidoscope of butterflies includes a range of lighting effects during the day and night. At around lunchtime, the butterflies will reflect and refract the sun’s natural light to paint the street. At night artificial intelligence synced to music will create another instagram moment.

Penumbral Lunar Eclipse in Hong Kong on November 30

This year’s third penumbral lunar eclipse will occur in Hong Kong on the afternoon of 30 November. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon only enters the penumbra of the Earth but not the umbra. During the event, the Moon will become slightly dimmer. A special feature of the coming lunar eclipse is that the eclipse will begin before moonrise.

The eclipse will begin at 3.30pm and end at 7.56pm, with the maximum eclipse occurring at 5.42pm, which will be four minutes after moonrise. The whole process (from moonrise to the moon leaving the penumbra) will last for two hours and 18 minutes.

As the elevation of the Moon will be rather low in the sky during the eclipse, it’s best observed from somewhere with an unobstructed view towards the east and northeast horizon.

The next lunar eclipse observable in Hong Kong will be a total lunar eclipse on May 26, 2021.
