SXSW 2016 – 10.39gb of Free Music

sxsw-2016The South by Southwest music festival or SXSW as it’s more popularly known is one of the largest in the world. And for over a decade SXSW has published thousands of DRM free tracks from it’s participating artists. This year’s release features over 1500 tracks and more than 10 gigabytes of music, FREE.

If you can’t physically make the festival all of the SXSW showcase MP3s are freely available on the festival’s website but that’s a lot of bands and music to search through. For the last few years Ben Stolt has taken the time and effort to put all the MP3s on BitTorrent to make exploring and enjoying the music available a bit easier. The 2016 torrent, split into two parts, contains 1,593 tracks.

All the tracks released since 2005 for previous SXSW festivals are still available with the 2005 – 2016 archives totalling more than 69 gigabytes. The links for the 2016 SXSW festival torrents are:
SXSW_2016_Showcasing_Artists_Part1.torrent – 1,006 files – 6.50GB
SXSW_2016_Showcasing_Artists_Part2.torrent – 587 files – 3.82GB

Each year SXSW torrents prove very popular with many thousands of music aficionados downloading gigabytes of free music across virtually every genre from both established acts and upcoming bands.

This year’s SXSW music festival has finished but the music will live on for as long as there are people sharing.

Art Central Opening Night – 21 March, 2016

Opening night at Art Central 2016, where big seems to be the ‘in’ theme. Extra large pictures, prints and sculptures/installations en vogue as many artists seem to want to overpower and intimidate by the pure size of their art rather than entrance and stimulate with inspiration.

BMW Art Journey 2016 Shortlist Announced

Samson Young
A joint initiative between Art Basel and BMW, the BMW Art Journey gives an emerging artist the oppourtunity to develop new ideas and give focus and free reign to a journey of creativity. The inaugural winner in 2015 was Samson Young whose project “For Whom The Bell Tolls” explored the sound of a bell through history and location.
The three artist selected for the short list in Hong Kong are:

abigail-reynolds-finAbigail Reynolds: based in Cornwall, United Kingdom, Abigail Reynolds studied English Literature at Oxford University before pursuing Fine Art at Goldsmiths University. Her interest in books prompts her collages, sculptures, films and most recently, printmaking. The ideas driving Reynold’s work are based on reportage photography books, her interest in networks of association and how our sense of time is affected by technology. She has exhibited at art institutions and galleries in London, Vienna, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Eindhoven. In her presentation at Art Basel in Hong Kong, Reynolds incorporates a large-scale sculpture which will print her sourced images onto glass for the first time.

newsha-tavakolian-finNewsha Tavakolian: born in 1981, Newsha is a Tehran based photo-journalist and artist. Early in her career she produced photo documentaries in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Pakistan and Yemen and gained international recognition with work published in magazines and newspapers such as Time, Der Spiegel, Le Monde and the New York Times. Tavakolian’s exhibitions include Thomas Erben Gallery, New York, Aaran Gallery, Tehran, and Otto Gallery, Florence. In her photography installation for Art Basel in Hong Kong 2016 she documents the lives of nine Teheran residents combining wall size scenery with a large video screen and several photographs of varying sizes into an installation drawn from her forthcoming exhibition and book ‘Blank pages of an Iranian photo album’

alvin-zafraAlvin Zafra: born in 1978 in Quezon City, Philippines, Alvin graduated from the College of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines in 2000 and won the Dominador Castaneda Award for Visual Essay. He’s exhibited at West Gallery, Quezon City, Singapore Art Museum, Singapore, and Mori Art Museum, Tokyo. In his exhibition at Art Basel in Hong Kong, Zafra explores two different cities and their architectures. The drawings presented are based on photographs he took in the National Capital Region of the Philippines and in Hanover, Germany.

New Cricket Pitches at Gin Drinkers Bay

The Hong Kong Cricket Association (HKCA) announced today, after HKCA President Rodney Miles signed a long term lease with the Environmental Protection Department, that three new cricket pitches will be built on 4.48-hectares of land at Gin Drinkers Bay in Kwai Chung.

HKCA CEO Tim Cutler is excited about what the new grounds can offer: “The new facility will create further opportunities to promote the sport’s growth by hosting school and community programmes during the week to league matches across junior, women’s and men’s cricket on the weekend.”

Despite the loss of cricket fields in recent years, the Hong Kong team has appeared in consecutive World Twenty20 tournaments and risen to an all-time high world ranking – establishing the Dragons as one of Hong Kong’s highest ranked major sports team.

“Whilst this is no means an elite facility with respect to allowing Hong Kong to host international fixtures, it is a key acquisition to release pressure on our development programmes and recreational leagues.” Cutler stated. “We thank the various government departments who have supported us in this project. Our special recognition goes to the Kwai Tsing District Council who gave us the all-important local approval and this is vindication of the superb work being done by our coaches and cricket officers in the area. In addition to the HKCA, there are other organisations who operate amazing programmes in our community using cricket as a tool for positive social change. Operations Breakthrough, Go Front, and the HKSKH Lady MacLehose Centre Services for Ethnic Minorities are three great examples, and we look forward to working closer still with these groups in their efforts.”

Construction will take place soon, with the view of having the grounds available for use at the start of 2016-17 season.
