Hong Kong Athletics Championships 2021

The Hong Kong Athletics Championships 2021 took place on the weekend of 1-2 May at Tseung Kwan O Sports Ground.

Saturday, 1 May Results

Shak Kam Ching and Chan Pui Kei won the Men’s and Women’s blue-ribbon sprints. Shak Kam Ching was 100m Champion in 10.68s with the silver and bronze medals going to Lee Hong Kit (10.77s) and Ho Wai Lun (10.95s).

Chan Pui Kei won the Women’s 100m gold medal in 12.31s with the silver and bronze medals going Luo Tsz Yuen (12.42s) and Kong Chun Ki (12.53s) respectively.

In the hurdles events, Chan Chung Wang ran 14.36s in the final to become the Men’s 110m Champion with Mui Chung Yeung second in 14.52s and Lui Chun Yun third in 15.09s. 

Lui Lai Yiu (13.66s) won gold in the Women’s 100m Hurdles, Shing Cho Yan (14.43s) and Liu Hoi Yan (14.50s) won silver and bronze respectively.

To Yuen Kwan threw 13.03m to win the gold medal in the Women’s Shot Put, while Yue Ya Xin won gold in the Women’s Long Jump with a leap of 6.17m.

Sunday, 2 May Results

In the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase, Leung Tak Yeung (9:30.87) smashed his own Hong Kong U20 record to win gold with Yu Hin Wa (9:38.83) in silver.

Cheung Pui Yin was in good form in the Men’s Pole Vault winning gold and set a new Hong Kong record at 4.80m an improvement of 35cm on the previous record when he set in 2019.

In the Women’s High Jump four athletes cleared 1.75m with Cheung Ching Laam Priscilla winning gold on countback, Chung Wai Yan and Yeung Man Wai were second and third (sadly the name of the fourth athlete was not included) 

In the Men’s Long Jump, Chan Ming Tai (7.70m) clinched gold on his final jump ahead of  Leung Shing Hei (7.23m) and Chan Chun Hei (7.17m).

Compulsory Test – 1 May, 2021

The Government announced, on 1 May, that under the Prevention and Control of Disease (Compulsory Testing for Certain Persons) Regulation (Cap. 599J) it has gazetted the following compulsory testing notice and specifications, which require any person who has been present at 26 specified premises during the specified period and foreign domestic helpers (persons subject to compulsory testing) to undergo a COVID-19 nucleic acid test before 14 May, 2021.

A spokesman for the Food and Health Bureau said, “As N501Y mutant strain is with high transmissibility, for prudence’s sake, the relevant persons who had been to the places patronised by the local cases with unknown sources of infection involving N501Y mutant strain are required to undergo three tests and all foreign domestic helpers are required to undergo testing to completely cut any possible transmission chain.”

In addition, since there were outbreaks of upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) in 11 schools, and the symptoms of URTI are similar to those of COVID-19, for prudence’s sake, these 11 schools are also covered in the compulsory testing notice.

Pizza Express Launches Summer Menu

Ahead of summer’s official start Pizza Express have launched a new Summer Menu featuring a wide range of new pizzas and pastas. bc sampled several of the new dishes at the Lee Tung Street branch which – with it’s chilled layout, fresh juice bar, coffee machine and free WiFi – also makes a nice change from your local coffee outlet when looking for a place to hunker down and work or chat.

Burrata & Eggplant ($88)

Among the new items on the Summer Menu are three new starters: Burrata & Eggplant ($88), Prawn & Tomato ($58) and Mango Crab Flatbread ($88). The Burrata is rich and creamy complimented nicely by the marinated eggplant.

There are two new salads Watermelon & Feta ($68/$128) and Mango Salsa Salad ($63/$108) available in small and large portions. The mango salsa is nice but like several of the other dishes on the menu it lacks that little extra freshness/ bite that has your tastebuds going… I want more!

The range of new pastas includes, as our waitress informed us, the already popular Baby Scallop Linguine ($143); Omnipork Penne Aglio Olio ($108) made with a plant based ‘pork’ and flavoured with fennel, water chestnut, garlic and mushroom; A Prawn Risotto ($148) cooked in a pomodoro sauce with garlic oil, onion and white wine tossed prawns and clams; Penne alla Norma ($118) a classic Italian pasta with eggplant, cherry tomatoes, basil, ricotta, pomodoro sauce and drizzled with garlic oil.

The new selection makes for a difficult choice when dining solo or in duo as there are several that sound tempting. bc opted for the Penne alla Norma which was filling and tasty.

Pizza Express has a bit of summer fun with it’s customers via the Burger Formaggi ($138) – one of four new pizzas on the menu – which tastes like a burger and is already proving popular. The other new pizzas are the Pancetta Garden ($138) and two vegetarian / vegan options Omnipork Bianco ($128) and Flori ($138).

The one new desert is the light Pineapple Cake with Ice Cream ($73) which is not too sweet and makes a pleasant finale to your meal.

The Pizza Express Vegan Menu has been revamped and offers a wide range of vegan dishes featuring vegan cheese and vegan pork. With an increasing awareness of healthy eating and vegan diners it’s good to see a big chain restaurant offering these options on a regular basis.

bc also likes the Lee Tung Street Pizza Express branch because it has a juice bar offering fresh juice ($68), smoothies ($68) and the new Watermelon Lemonade ($38) and Mrs Peroni ($68).

New Makati 30th Anniversary – 17 May, 2019

New Makati hosted a party for regulars and friends on the 17 May, 2019 to celebrate its Thirtieth Anniversary. And a great time was had by one and all!

While it may not strictly be the bar’s 30th birthday (a previous owner didn’t life 4s, so the 4th, 14th and 24th anniversaries were skipped) New Makati / Makati is one of the oldest bars in Wanchai and if walls had ears the tales it might tell…

Jeong Eun Ji @ MacPherson Stadium – 18 May, 2019

Korean pop star Jeong Eun Ji entertained a packed MacPherson Stadium, but a paltry 11 songs seems poor value for tickets which cost from $688 up to $1,488.

Soccer Sevens Celebrates Twenty Anniversary

Seven-a-side football might not have become an Olympic sport and global sensation like it’s rugby namesake, but the Hong Kong Soccer 7s – which celebrates it’s Twentieth Anniversary this year on 17-19 May – has become an important tournament for clubs and players across the globe.

The twentieth tournament sees newcomers Fulham and Portimonense face off in the group stage. The English and Portuguese sides will be joined in Group A by competition regulars West Ham United and local outfit HKFC Captain’s Select for the tournament.

Newcastle United begin the defence of their title, having beaten Rangers in the 2018 final, alongside Brighton & Hove Albion, current AFC Champions League holders Kashima Antlers from Japan and Hong Kong side Yau Yee League Select in Group C.

Six-time winners Aston Villa will go head-to-head with two-time champions Leicester City in Group B in a repeat of the 2017 final, with the duo joined by nine-time Hong Kong champions Kitchee and Singapore Cricket Club.

Finally, in Group D, Rangers return in search of their maiden title against newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers, HKFA Red Dragons and Hong Kong Football Club in Group D.

“The group that intrigues me the most is Group A in the Main tournament which sees West Ham, who are always a strong side, and two newcomers in Portimonense and Fulham, so who knows how strong they’ll be,” said HKFC Soccer Sevens Tournament Director Chris Plowman. “They’re going to be going up against our HKFC Captain’s Select team, so if there’s a group of death, I’m guessing that’s the one.

“Leicester and Villa in the same group will be interesting and Kitchee as a local side are always very strong. Singapore Cricket Club have got some tough matches on their hands.”

“It’s wonderful.” said Hong Kong national team coach and former Finland international Mixu Paatelainen “There’s history to this tournament and you can see there are big clubs from England taking part.” Mixu added “the tournament will be valuable for Hong Kong’s youngsters to play against hopefully the future stars of the Premier League.”

In the Masters tournament, defending champions Discovery Bay have been paired in Group A with two-time winners Citi All Stars, last year’s runners-up Nottingham Forest Mobsters, HKFC Chairman’s Select and Singapore Cricket Club Masters.

In Group B, meanwhile, playonPROS will play competition regulars Wallsend Boys Club, and Hong Kong sides Eleven FC, HKFC Masters and Kowloon Cricket Club Veterans.

“It is a very exciting draw and you can see from the line-up it will be very fierce competition,” said Wayne Fong of sponsors Citi Hong Kong. “We like that the tournament changes every year and invites teams from all over the world to make it more diverse, allowing this tournament to be better and bigger.”
