Counting Frames – David Bordwell

In memory of David Bordwell, a well-known film historian and Hong Kong film confidant who passed away in early 2024, the Hong Kong Film Critics Society has organised a commemorative exhibition, How Not to Be Crazy – Bordwell Sees Hong Kong Cinema and a podcast Movies Dare to Feel That. The event runs from November 18, 2025 to January 20, 2026.

A combination of film nerd and academic, the author of Planet Hong Kong: Popular Cinema and the Art of Entertainment, Bordwell had a unique eye for Hong Kong cinema. The festival features twelve classic Hong Kong films that Bordwell appreciated and analysed in detail, plus post-screening talks.

Films featured include: The Blood of Heroes (1989) and Dao Ma Dan (1986) both of which premiered in Hong Kong. The rarely exhibited The Grandmaster 3D (2013)  and 無間道 Infernal Affairs, 忠烈圖 The Valiant Ones, 金枝玉葉 He’s a Woman She’s a Man, 十八般武藝 Legendary Weapons of China

Remembrance Day 2025

As we remember all those, everyone a hero, who gave their lives to protect our freedoms…

It is scary and sad to see how many people in UK, Europe and the US seem to have forgotten why they died… Time to stand up to the fascists and those who profit off the algorithms that fuel hate.

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Cage and Coffin Homes in Twenty Twenty-four

A recently published video by YouTuber Drew Binsky reminds the world of Hong Kong’s cage and coffin homes.

The video also captures the unique spirit and generosity of HongKongers and it’s that, that makes Hong Kong such a wonderful place.

Regrettably, the government’s planned new legislation only covers sub-divided flats – not cage or coffin homes.

8 Years Ago Today… Joseph Lau Spoke About Love

Even for Hong Kong, buying a newspaper’s front page to tell the world about your love life is a bit extreme. But 8 years ago Joseph Lau, Leun-hung did exactly that.

The advert was a blunt and informative response to tabloid speculation about the status of his relationship with Lui Lai-kwan.

Oh did local tongues wag…

Grand Opening @ King Ludwig am Meer, Soho West – 10 November, 2024

The King Parrot Group celebrated the opening of their latest restaurant King Ludwig am Meer in Soho West with a party on 10 November, 2024.

Okay, I know many of you will go ‘Soho West!’ Well, think of Sai Wan Ho’s Soho East in the West. It’s a short walk from Nam Cheong MTR, and while it is all high-rise concrete and glass…  The waterfront promenade is pet friendly, faces west to catch the sunset, and even boasts a view of Hong Kong Island. You can also, sort of, walk along the water’s edge all the way to West Kowloon and thence to TST and the Star Ferry.

All in all, in a very manufactured way, it is rather a nice place to grab some fresh air – especially now you can enjoy a cold beer at King Ludwig and sit outside!
