Elaine Chow: 14 March, 1986 – 27 October, 2005

In loving memory of Elaine Chow our friend and colleague who in the early hours of the 27 October 2005 committed suicide by stepping off a building. Gone, but never ever forgotten!

Elaine was a wonderful, vibrant young woman, who brought joy to everyone she met. Her smile could and would brighten both the sunniest and dreariest of days.

When I asked if she’d like to turn her internship into a job she replied, amidst a beaming smile and joyful disbelief “You mean, you want to pay me to eat…” The memory of her beaming smiling face of disbelief as replied still brings a big smile to my face and a warm glow to my heart.

As I write this with tears running down my cheeks, my heart breaks as my mind replays the screams erupting from my phone, looking up and seeing Elaine falling – so fast, yet in slow motion – to her death. My brain cannot process the truth of what it sees and my legs will never be moving fast enough to reach her… The pain of those images never seems to fade, but nor thankfully do the memories of her smile and the joy she infused to all around her. RIP Elaine you are deeply missed.

********

Tragically almost 3 people a day, on average, commit suicide in Hong Kong. It’s the unseen killer across all ages,

Earlier this year many people rightly heaped praise on constable Ifzal Zaffar who talked someone down from a crane. But few wondered what happen to the person he saved. Did they receive the help they needed to resolve the problems that put them on the crane?

If you know someone who’s talking (even jokingly) about suicide talk to them. If you’re thinking of suicide, talk to someone first.

Wine & Dine Festival – Some Suggestions

The annual Wine & Dine Festival returns to the Central Harbourfront this weekend fatter for all the fine wine and food indulged in, as the venue’s waistline expands to encompass half of Tamar Park.

There are entrances at both ends of the festival and around 400 booths to enjoy including country pavilions from the USA and a large Bordeaux area in the centre which includes not only wine but also a food from the Bordeaux and South West of France. Items on offer include a French ‘cheesecake’ known as Torteau Formager ($20) and

On the side of the ‘concept store’ Filters Lane is offering chocolate and passion fruit cocktails ($55) which include a fragrant Earl Grey foam.

Hong Kong Street Eats is showcasing it’s cook at home egg waffle with savoury and sweet toppings, nice but a bit small and pricey at $50.

The hotel zone features some good sized potions of popular dishes from local hotels including The Pullman, Hong Kong Gold Coast Hotel and City Garden Hotel.

Mac and cheese raclette ($100)… from Porterhouse features four cheeses and is rather tasty, but heavy on the stomach. Raclette is popular around the festival with several other stands offering it straight, with meatballs and other combos.

With so many wine booths, our recommendation is to wander around and try things to find those you enjoy. It can get expensive, but step out of what you’d normally choose and try something different. Lots of companies are offering tastes and there are numerous free classes.

Two final thoughts, bring a bottle of water. Even with the more spread out venue, it’s hot. Have fun, there’s lots of good food and drink to taste.

What Are the Cricket Sixes?

The Sixes started in 1992 but it’s been five years since the last tournament, so here’s a brief guide to what’s going on!

It’s just like traditional cricket and all the the regular laws of game apply except that each match only takes around 45 minutes to complete.

Why? As the name suggests the game is six players per side compared with the usual 11, which means once the bowler and wicket-keeper are in position there aren’t many fieldsmen that the batting team need to evade to hit lots of ball to an over the boundaries.

Each team faces five overs each, and everyone (except for the wicketkeeper) is required to bowl one over each.

Batsmen are forced to retire at 31, but can come back in once all other batsmen have been dismissed or have retired. This can make for some interesting situations at the end of the innings with the lower-order taking risky singles knowing that if they are out, their in-form batsman can come back in.

This year at the Hong Kong World Sixes, seven international teams plus hosts Hong Kong will play 23 matches over just two days. The eight teams are split into two groups, with the results determining the seeding positions for the second day.

Finals day includes four quarter-finals, with the four losers heading into the plate tournament, while the remaining four teams compete for the major title.

South Africa are the defending champions from 2012 and they will face Hong Kong in the opening game at 8am on Saturday morning. For the full schedule of game times click here.

Hong Kong will be captained by Babar Hayat, who missed out by one vote on winning the player of the tournament award in 2012.

The squad also contains fellow big-hitters Nizakat Khan and Jamie Atkinson, who also experience in the Sixes format.

Hong Kong Squad:
Babar Hayat (Captain), Nizakat Khan, Aizaz Khan, Ehsan Khan, Ehsan Nawaz, Jamie Atkinson, Tanveer Ahmed.
